The Manchester girls tennis team won the Peru sectional 3-2 over Peru Friday.
Malyssa Bedke lost at No. 1 3-6, 1-6.
Megan Metzger won at No. 2 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Laurel Ruppert lost at No. 3 singles 4-6, 5-7.
Natalee Cain and Katie Peden won at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-2.
Amy Collett and Tawni Kincaid won at No. 2 doubles 7-5, 6-3.
Manchester won its first Sectional title since 2006.
“It was an amazing team win,” said Squire co-coach Tim McLaughlin. “It was our fifth match in five nights and for the girls to be able to fight thru this match against a very good Peru team is simply a testament to their never quit attitude and real desire to not give up. Both doubles teams played very well and gave us an early lead in the match. Amy and Tawni started off the match down 1-5 and then won nine games in a row to gain control of the match. Megan lost the first set and then fought back to force a third set, setting up a very dramatic finish. She pulled it out for the team against a very good player who I was told was unbeaten on the year. Megan gave it her all in a pressure circumstance.”
“It was quite a week for the Squires. We got great contributions from all five positions over the three-match Sectional. Everyone contributed to the wins on different nights. It was truely a team effort,” McLaughlin added.
