Southwood/Lewis Cass Advance In Sectional

It was night two at the Wabash girls softball sectional. Game one would pit Northfield and Southwood for a third time this year and game two would be the host Lady Apaches and #17 Lewis Cass.

Northfield and Southwood had played each other twice this year with each team winning once, so the winner would not only advance in the sectional, but win the season series.

Southwood threatened in the first inning. Hailee Parish would lead off with a single and was followed by Jessica Foley being hit by a pitch. Jenny Bentley moved the runners to second and third before Courtney Simpson walked to load the bases. Northfield shortstop Caitlin Eltzroth would make a back hand stop and out run the runner to third for the force to end the Knight rally with no runs.

Neither team would plate a run the first three innings as starting pitchers Katelyn Shafer and Jenny Bentley dominated.

In the bottom of the fourth the Norse would finally break the stale mate. Caitlin Eltzroth was hit by a pitch. Katelyn Shafer then lined a double to the left center fence to score Eltzroth and the Norse led 1-0. Shafer advanced to second on the throw. Kayla Unger would then sac pinch runner Amber Parker to third and was followed by a Bethany Azbell grounder that scored Parker, 2-0.

In the top of the sixth the Lady Knights would mount their comeback. Jessica Foley walked and then stole second. Foley advanced to third on a grounder by Jenny Bentley and tried to score and was thrown out at the plate. Mikala Mettler pinch ran for Bentley and scored on a Courtney Simpson single. Allie Enyeart followed Simpson with a double, driving Simpson home to tie the game. Logan Hensley would then drive home Enyeart with a single and the Knights led 3-2. Shafer would strike out the last two batters.

In the seventh Jordan Randolph would reach on an error. Parish would walk to put a runner in scoring position and the Knights took advantage of it. Jenny Bentley singled home a run and was followed by Courtney Simpson with an rbi single to give the Knights a 5-2 lead. The Norse were not going to just roll over. Emily Shafer doubled and was knocked home by a Callie Monce single to make it 5-3. With one out, Arie Kennedy lined a shot at Knight first baseman Jordyn Chain who made a great catch and stepped on first for the game ending double play.

In game two Wabash was taking on perennial power, #17 Lewis Cass.

After holding Wabash in the first Cass would plate 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-0.

In the second the Apaches would threaten. Catina McCord would single and was followed by a Darrian Shaepherd double, but McCord was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Cass would then force a ground out and get a strike out to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the inning the Lady Kings would score one more and led 4-0.

Wabash started the third inning with a Brittany Stone single, but again stalled without a run. Cass would answer with two more for a 6-0 lead.

The fourth inning is when Cass would flex their muscle. After holding the Apaches without a runner in the inning the Lady Kings would score 8 runs to put the game out of reach.

Three Wabash strike outs in the fifth would end the game as Cass earned the right to play Southwood in game two Wednesday.
