After covering the opening game of the boys baseball sectional we caught up with the Southwood softball team in the fourth inning of their second round sectional game against Lewis Cass and Oh what a game it was. The Lady Knights played their hearts out, falling 4-3 in a 10 inning battle.
Lewis Cass had scored 3 runs in the first and led 3-0 in the fourth. Just as we arrived, Logan Hensley cleared the loaded bases with a double to tie the score and it was game on from there.
The Knights would have one base runner in the fifth which was a Jessica Foley walk. Jenny Bentley shut down Cass with three pop ups and we headed for the sixth.
Again in the sixth the Knights would put a runner on and not score. Allie Enyeart had a single. Bentley would force three pop ups again and head to the seventh tied.
Both pitchers would dominate in the seventh to force extra innings.
In the 8th the Knights would threaten with two outs. Courtney Simpson drew a walk and was followed by Allie Enyeart reaching on an error, but Cass clamped down and got out of the inning. Bentley would give up a lead off double, then strike out two of the next three batters to escape.
Josie Grossnickle drew a one out walk in the 9th, but the next two hitters were strike out victims to give Cass a shot in the bottom of the inning. Lead off hitter Kourtney Mayhill singled and was moved to second with a sacrifice bunt. A ground out would move Mayhill to third with two outs, Bentley would increase the gas and strike out the next batter to force a 10th inning.
The Knights would threaten again in the 10th. With one out Jenny Bentley drew a walk. Courtney Simpson would then line a double to left center and the Knights were in business with runners on second and third with one out. The next pitch was a grounder to the pitcher, who held Bentley at third while getting the out at first. A fly ball to right ended the threat and set up the Cass 10th. The first Cass hitter singled and the Lady Kings rolled the dice, sacrifice bunting twice to move the runner to third with two outs. The next hitter ripped a shot down third that tipped the glove of Logan Hensley and in to the outfield for the game winning single, 4-3.
