The Northfield boys basketball team looked as though they were going to take their momentum from Saturday’s win over Bluffton and carry it over against Southern Wells Tuesday, starting off strong and then stubbing their toes in a 74-63 loss to the Raiders.
The Norse got off to a good start. With the game tied at 4, Adam Roser drained a three that started a 7-0 run to put Northfield up 11-4. The Raiders wouls claw their way back to within one at 11-10 when Ryan Keaffaber hit and was followed by a Collin Dawes bucket. Carter Frieden would connect to put the Norse up five at 17-12 and the Norse led 21-16 after one.
To start the second quarter it looked like the Norse were going to run away with it. Collin Dawes hit a free throw that was backed up by a bucket from Ryan Keaffaber and a free throw from Tanner Wilcox to build a 25-16 lead. With the Norse up 27-18 after a Keaffaber bucket the Raiders started to catch fire. Quickly they cut the lead to 30-27, but the Norse held on. At 34-33 Adam Roser gave the Norse some breathing room with a three to make it 37-33, but Southern Wells hit two free throws with 2.0 left to make the halftime score 37-35.
The Norse would go inside to start the third quarter with Marcus Kroh hitting twice on each side of a Raider three pointer to make it 41-38. For the next four and a half minutes the lid on the Norse bucket would get as small as a dime, while the visitors end opened up as big as a tractor tire. Southern Wells would score 16 straight points to take a 54-41 lead that was finally stopped by Kroh’s third bucket of the quarter with 4 seconds remaing. Kroh scored all 6 points for the Norse in the quarter as Northfield trailed 54-43 with a quarter to go.
Southern Wells would increase the lead to 57-43 to start the fourth quarter on a three point play before the Northfield bucket opened back up. Ryan Keaffaber hit two free throws and was followed by a Kroh bucket to cut the Raider lead to 57-47 with 6:22 to go. Applying full court pressure, the Norse would force some turn overs. After a Raider bucket and a Norse time out, the Norse would go on a run. Keaffaber and Dawes hit to make it 60-51, which was followed by a Carter Frieden steal for a bucket and a Keaffaber three point play to make it 60-55. The Norse kept coming and with a Tanner Wilcox bucket made it 60-59 with just over three minutes left. As fast as the run came it went away. Southern Wells would catch fire again, out scoring Northfield 14-2 over the next three minutes to seal the win over the Norse, 74-63.
