One night after the Southwood boys basketball team topped county rival Manchester, one would worry about a let down on Saturday against the Peru Tigers. Instead what the Knight fans got was a show from the Knights as they tamed the Tigers 72-58.
The Knights would strike fast behind the sharp shooting of Robbie Cole as they jumped out to a 25-8 first quarter lead. Cole was absolutely in the zone, connecting on 6 three pointers in the quarter. Levi Sutton also added a three as the Knights tried to deliver the knock out punch in the first quarter.
Shane Smith would take over in the second quarter, as he along with Corey Phillipy dominated the taller Tigers. The Knights led 39-26 at the half. Cole had 18 points, with Smith adding 13 in the first half.
Smith would start the third quarter converting a three point play to give the Knights a 42-26 lead. Peru cut the lead to 42-31 when Jackson Blair found the bottom of the net from behind the arch and the Knights were off and running, building the lead to 17 points. Corey Phillipy would add a couple free throws and the Knights led 55-44 after three.
With a balanced scoring attack in the fourth quarter the Knights would never let Peru get closer than 10 points, with five players scoring in the quarter and pulling away the last two minutes for the 72-58 final.
Southwood put four players in double figures.
Shane Smith led the Knights with 23 points, 14 rebounds, 2 steals. Robbie Cole had 18 points, 2 steals. Corey Phillipy had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals. Jackson Blair had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assist. Levi Sutton had 5 points, 7 assist. Nathan Hollars had 3 points, 3 assist.
