The Manchester Lady Squires basketball team took on the Central Noble Cougars Thursday. Coach Mark Underwood had the task of making sure the team was focused and were not looking past the Lady Cougars, as Central Noble was 0-10 and had lost 37 games in a row, dating back to January 13th, 2011.
Underwood played 10 players with 9 of them scoring as the Lady Squires played with intensity in a 53-27 win.
Kayla Flack would hit the first bucket of the game and with the score tied at 2, Bekah Brunn would convert twice to go up 6-2. After a Cougar bucket the Lady Squires would go to work. Flack would convert a three point play that was followed by buckets from Kalene Freshour and Brunn to increase the lead to 13-4. Manchester had five players score in the quarter with Claire Barnett hitting the last bucket for an 18-7 first quarter lead.
The intensity would pick up even more in the second quarter, especially on the defensive end, as the Squires held Central Noble to just two points in the quarter. Again Flack would convert a three point play that was followed by a Brunn bucket to go up 22-7. After the lone Cougar bucket, Manchester would finish the quarter on an 8-0 run. Tabby DeWitt would get in on the action with a three point play with the half ending with buckets from Sidney Snep and Brunn to lead 30-9.
A free throw from Freshour sandwiched between buckets from Brunn and Autumn Brewer got the Lady Squires started in the second half as they increased their lead to 35-9. After a Central Noble bucket the Squires would score seven straight to increase the lead to 42-11 and led 44-14 after three.
Perhaps losing their focus to start the fourth, the Squires gave up a 9-3 run to the Cougars to start the quarter. The lone bucket was a three from Flack. Katelyn Parrett would stop the Central run with a bucket that started a 6-0 run by the Squires as they coasted to the 53-27 win.
