The Southwood Lady Knight basketball team is sitting on top of the TRC Saturday after defeating county foe Wabash 43-34 to grab the top spot.
The two teams were tied in the TRC with perfect 3-0 records before the Lady Knights grabbed the top spot halfway through the conference season with the win. The two teams did not meet in the county tourney.
Sarah White got the Lady knights going, scoring the first 5 points to give Southwood a 5-1 lead. Kyleigh Hampton would drain a three to draw the Lady Apaches to 5-4 before Mollie Harnish hit. Sarah Puckett and Kaley Harness would trade buckets before a Puckett free throw and Southwood led 9-7 after one.
Both teams would have trouble finding the bucket in the second quarter as a total of 14 points was scored. Katie Stouffer would increase the Knight lead to 11-7 before Lyndsie Thomas hit. Neither team would score the next few minutes until Stouffer hit again. Sarah White would convert a three point play with 2:09 remaining to give Southwood a 16-9 lead. Wabash would answer with a three from Charlie Pardo and a bucket from Jaclyn Lewis right before the buzzer and Southwood led 16-14 at the half.
Wabash would take their first lead of the game to start the third quarter on a Claire Cromer three and an Abby Stein free throw to lead 18-16. Ana Marie Farlow knotted the score with a bucket before Cromer hit from behind the arch again to put Wabash up 21-18. Farlow would then tie the score again, converting a three point play and was followed by an Emily Murphy bucket to go up 23-21. Pardo would find the bucket from behind the arch a second time and Wabash led 24-23. In the see saw battle Sarah White would trade a bucket with two Lyndsie Thomas free throws and Wabash was still up one at 26-25. Neither team would hit a bucket the remainder of the quarter, but Knights Sarah White and Kaley Harness would hit two free throws each to give Southwood a 29-26 lead with a quarter to go.
The two teams would trade free throws early in the fourth and after a Emily Murphy bucket, the Lady Knights led 35-29. Sarah Puckett would hit to make it a four point game at 35-31 when Southwood took control. The Knights would score 6 straight and led 41-31 with a minute to go. Wabash would hit three straight free throws to make it 41-34 before Sarah White connected twice from the line with 24.9 left for the final 43-34 score.
Leading Southwood was Sarah White with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assist, 1 steal. Ana Marie Farlow had 9 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block. Kaley Harness had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assist, 2 steals. Emily Murphy had 5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assist, 2 blocks. Katie Stouffer had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block. Mollie Harnish had 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist. Amy Bowman had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 block.
For Wabash Claire Cromer had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals. Charlie Pardo had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist. Lyndsie Thomas had 6 points, 6 rebounds. Sarah Puckett had 5 points, 1 rebound. Kyleigh hampton had 4 points, 4 rebounds. Jaclyn Lewis had 2 points. Abby Stein had 1 point, 6 rebounds, 2 steals. Katelyn Vogel had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal.
Wabash won the junior varsity game 30-23.
