It was a bitter sweet night for the Manchester Lady Squire basketball team as they traveled to Peru Wednesday and were defeated by the Lady Tigers 42-37, but got to watch Squire senior Kayla Flack reach the 1000 point barrier for her career in the second quarter.
Manchester would get the first bucket of the game by Autumn Brewer and took the lead a second time with two free throws from Kayla Flack to lead 5-3. Over the next two and a half minutes Peru would go on a 6-0 run to open a 9-5 lead before Brewer hit again and was followed by a Kalene Freshour bucket to knot the score at 9. Peru would score the last bucket of the quarter to make it 11-9 after one.
Brewer would tie the score to start the second with a bucket,with Peru quickly responding. One trip later Kayla Flack connected, not only to tie the game, but become only the sixth girls player in Manchester history to score 1000 career points. With the game tied at 16, Tabby DeWitt would give the Lady Squires the lead for a moment before Peru scored four straight to make it 20-19. Flack again would come up big, hitting a three right before the buzzer and Manchester led 22-20 at the half.
Manchester scored the first four points of the third quarter to go up 26-20 at looked like they were going to take control of the game when Peru got hot, scoring the next 13 points to go up 33-26 with 46.1 left. Kalene Freshour would stop the run with a free throw and Manchester trailed 33-27 after three.
Autumn Brewer and Tabby DeWitt would go to work in the fourth, banging the boards and scoring seven points to draw the Squires to within four at 38-34. Peru would answer with a bucket with 1:14 to play and Manchester was forced to play the foul game. The first two fouls the Tigers would miss the front end of a one and one, but the Lady Squires could not capitalize before fouling again with 34.8. The Tigers would one free throw two different times to build the lead to 42-34, with Flack hitting one free throw with 3.5 left for the 42-35 final.
Kayla Flack ” It was funny at the beginning of the game. I couldn’t do anything until I got those four points. I couldn’t have have done it without my team mates clear back to my freshman year pushing me. I didn’t know how elite it was until I realized there were just five who had done it before me ”
Flack joins Megan Eckert, Jessica Hicks, Amy Fahrnow, Jennifer Frieden and Pam White in the girls 1000 point club at Manchester.
Leading Manchester was Autumn Brewer with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 1 steal. Kayla Flack had 8 points, 4 assist, 6 rebounds. Tabby DeWitt had 8 points, 1 block, 7 rebounds, 1 steal. Bekah Brunn had 4 points, 1 assist, 6 rebounds, 1 steal. Kalene Freshour had 3 points, 1 assist, 6 rebounds, 1 steal. Claire Barnette had 1 assist.
The junior varsity lost to Peru 28-18.
Celina Carter had 6 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals. Tiffany Johnson had 5 points, 7 rebounds.
