The Southwood boys basketball team traveled to Mentone Friday to battle Tippecanoe Valley for sole possession of the TRC lead. A dismal second quarter was the doom of the Knights as they fell to Valley 69-53.
The Knights kept with the Vikings in the slow scoring first quarter as Valley led just 9-6.
The second quarter would be the down fall for Southwood, as the Vikings would go on two runs, out scoring the Knights 16-4 to lead 25-10.
The Vikings opened their lead to as much as 18 points early in the third quarter before Jackson Blair would try to will the Knights back. Blair scored 9 points in the quarter, but the Vikings kept one step ahead, out scoring Southwood 18-17 to lead 43-27 with a quarter to go.
The Knights would come out in the fourth quarter, pressing, trapping and pushing the ball which led to an offensive out burst of 26 points. Valley, having several weapons themselves kept pace with the Knights to also score 26 points for the 69-53 final. Jackson Blair had 20 points in the second half.
Leading Southwood was Jackson Blair with 24 points, 2 steals. Corey Phillipy had 12 points, 6 rebounds. Shane Smith had 8 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assist, 4 steals, 2 blocks. Robbie Cole had 5 rebounds, 4 assist. Levi Sutton had 2 assist.
The junior varisty lost to Valley 38-32.
Noah Kirk and Dolph Struck had 9 points each. Alex Harmon had 8 points, Jacob Lloyd 3, Luke Elliott 2.
