The Southwood Lady Knight basketball team did something Saturday that has happened just once in the history of girls basketball at the school, win the TRC.
The Lady Knights clinched at least a share of the TRC by defeating Tippecanoe Valley 57-39 to give them a perfect 6-0 conference record and going 12-4 on the year. Southwood plays North Miami Tuesday and with a win would win the TRC out right. The Lady Knights lead Wabash by one game.
With the parents in the stands more nervous than the players, the Lady Knights calmed some nerves early. Trailing 6-4, Southwood would go on a 12-0 run to open a 16-6 gap. Katie Stouffer got it going with a bucket as four different players scored during the run. Amy Bowman hit a layup off a steal to put Southwood up, with Kaley Harness hitting a three and Ana Marie Farlow a bucket. With five different players scoring the Knights opened a 21-10 lead before Valley hit two buckets to end the quarter with Southwood leading 21-14.
Sarah White would give Southwood a 9 point lead twice early in the second as Valley tried to keep pace. White and Farlow would be the only two Knights to score in the quarter, but it was enough to out score Valley 13-9 to increase the lead as the Knights led 34-23 at the half. White had 9 points in the quarter.
The Knights would double up on Valley in the third, winning the quarter 16-8. Katie Stouffer started the quarter with two free throws and was followed with buckets from Bowman and White to lead 40-23. After a Valley bucket, amy Bowman would score 6 straight points to give Southwood their largest lead of the night at 46-25. Valley would out score Southwood 6-4 the last two minutes, with Southwood leading 50-31 after three.
White and Stouffer would hit to start the fourth quarter and boost the lead to 56-33. With Valley scrambling for the ball and the Knights milking the clock, 7 points were scored the rest of the game as the Lady Knights clinched the TRC with a 57-39 win.
Sarah White had 17 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assist, Katie Stouffer had 12 points, 1o rebounds, 2 assist, 2 blocks. Amy Bowman had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 blocks. Ana Marie Farlow had 8 points, 4 assist, 2 steals. Kaley Harness had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assist, 7 steals, 3 blocks. Mollie Harnish had 2 points, 1 rebound. Emily Murphy had 2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 asisst, 1 steal.
Southwood out rebounded Valley 39-26 and shot 12 of 18 from the free throw line.
The junior varsity topped Valley 26-20.
Aleesha Phillips had 12 points, Haley Heath 7, Emily Lehner 4, Abby Houlihan 3.
Meranda Friend led in rebounding with 8. Danielle Pegg had 2 blocks.
