Lady Norse Stumble Against Whitko

Perhaps looking a couple days ahead with their matchup with 1A, #1 Ft Wayne Canterbury coming Tuesday, the Northfield Lady Norse basketball team stubbed their toe Saturday to Whitko, falling to the Wildcats 42-35.

Riding a seven game winning streak, the Lady Norse looked like they were on their way to another early in the game. Northfield got started with a three point play from Sydney Eltzroth and a bucket from Arie Kennedy to lead 5-0. After a Whitko three, Sidney Reed hit a free throw and was followed by a Sydney Eltzroth three to go up 9-3. Whitko would then go on a 7-0 run to take a 10-9 lead with just seconds left when Payton Thomson banked home a three at the buzzer from the volleyball line to give Northfield a 12-10 lead after one.

As exciting as the first quarter was, it was just the opposite in the second. The two teams scored a total of 7 points as both struggled to find the bucket. Northfield out scored Whitko 4-3 on buckets from Sidney Reed and Sydney Eltzroth to lead 16-13 at the half.

Kylie Echard would hit a bucket and Kennedy a free throw to start the third, putting the Lady Norse up 19-13. After two Whitko free throws both teams would go ice cold again. No points were scored until Echard hit with 1:52 to go that sparked a Norse 5-0 run to lead 24-16. Whitko would score twice before the buzzer to cut the Norhfield lead to 24-21 with a quarter to go.

Whitko would hit the first two buckets of the fourth quarter to take a 25-24 lead, but Northfield answered. Eltzroth would give the Norse the lead back with a bucket and was followed by a three point play from Reed and a bucket from Kennedy to go up 30-25 with 5:00 left. Whitko would then go on a 7-0 run to take a 32-30 lead, when Arie Kennedy hit two free throws to knot the score at 32 with 3:17 remaining. The Norse could only manage 3 points down the stretch as Whitko out scored Norhfield 10-3 the last three minutes for the upset win, 42-35.

Quote from Coach Cervenka: “Today was a disappointing loss to TRC opponent Whitko. We missed too many free throws and lay ups. We have to improve on playing stronger with the ball and making better decisions. We have to bounce
back quickly and learn from our mistakes before a very good Fort Wayne Canterbury team on Tuesday.”

Leading Nrthfield was Sydney Eltzroth with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block. Arie Kennedy had 7 points, 4 rebounds. Sidney Reed had 5 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal.
