Strong Start Lifts Lady Apaches

The Wabash Lady Apache basketball team needed a win to build momentum for next week’s sectionl and wasted no time Thursday getting the job done, starting the game on a 11-0 run in route to a 50-30 win over Maconaquah.

The defending sectional champions would come out of the gate strong, scoring the games first 11 points. Lyndsie Thomas got things going with a bucket that was followed by a Kyleigh Hampton three to take a 5-0 lead just 30 seconds in to the game. Charlie Pardo would then get in on the act with a three to push the lead to 8-0 and the Apaches finished the run with two free throws from Thomas and one from Katelyn Vogel. Maconaquah broke the run with two buckets, then Thomas finished the quarter with a bucket for the 13-4 first quarter lead.

Kyleigh Hampton started the scoring in the second and was matched by a Maconaquah bucket. At that point Wabash went on a 9-0 run that increased the lead to 24-6 and the route was on. Hampton got the run going and was followed by a three from Claire Cromer and buckets from Sarah Puckett and another Hampton bucket. Lyndsie Thomas would finish the Wabash scoring with two free throws and the Lady Apaches led 26-9 at the half.

Kyleigh Hampton would drain a three to start the third quarter and give Wabash a 20 point lead at 29-9 before Maconaquah made a run of their own, scoring 8 straight to get back to within 12 at 29-17. Sarah Puckett stopped the run with a bucket, then Kyleigh Hampton blocked a shot, grabbed the ball and fed Claire Cromer for a layup to push the lead to 33-17. The Lady Braves again cut the lead to 11 at 33-22 with 47.5 remaining when Katelyn Vogel hit her first bucket and Hampton connected right before the buzzer to give Wabash a 37-22 lead after three.

For the third quarter ina row, Hampton would start the scoring, this time with a three to make it 40-22. Charlie Pardo would hit a three and Wabash got buckets from Thomas and Jaclyn Lewis to cruise to the 50-30 win.

Leading Wabash was Kyleigh Hampton with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assist, 1 steal, 5 blocks. Lyndsie Thomas had 11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assist. Charlie Pardo had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal. Claire Cromer had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist. Sarah Puckett had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block. Katelyn Vogel had 3 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assist, 1 steal. Jaclyn Lewis had 2 points, 2 rebounds. Heather Miller had 1 rebound. Abby Stein had 1 rebound.

The junior varsity won 26-13.

Katie McCauley and Madison Barden had 7 points each. Shelby Stone had 4, Sarah Ritter 2, Heather Miller 2, Kristin Cromer 2.
