Norse Hold Off Scrappy Squires

The Northfield boys basketball team raised their season record to 11-6 Friday with a 64-52 win over Manchester, but not before the pesky Squires gave the Norse all they wanted for three and a half quarters.

The Squires, a team that will be reckoned with by sectional time got off to a great start, racing out to a 5-1 lead. Neil Underwood got the first bucket with free throws coming from Claudell Dickantone and Chase Fierstos for the lead. Lucas Schilling would hit with Dickantone draining a two and a three and the Squires were up 12-6. The Norse would close the gap before the quarter ended with two free throws from Jon Richardson and a bucket from Ryan Keaffaber to close the Squires lead to 12-10 after one.

The Norse would get things rolling in the second. After a three from Clayton Petrie the Squires led 15-10 when the Norse made their move. Richardson would connect on a three that started an 11-0 run. Tanner Wilcox, Collin Dawes and Keaffaber all hit as the Norse took a 21-15 lead. Claudell Dickantone would stop the run with free throws and a see saw four minutes took place with Northfield leading 32-30 when Richardson was fouled on a back door play with 0.4 on the clock, making the bucket and converting the three point play to give Northfield a 35-30 lead at the half.

Northfield would stretch the lead to 37-30 on a Carter Frieden bucket to start the second half before Neil Underwood hit and was followed by a Dickantone three to cut the lead to 37-35. The Norse would then score six straight on two Collin Dawes buckets and one from Keaffaber to make it 43-35. Manchester would answer. An Underwood bucket, followed by a Clayton Petrie three let the Norse know the Squires were not going away as it was 43-40. After buckets from Dawes and Derek Flack the Squires would give up another bucket right before the buzzer, this time by Tanner Wilcox and Northfield led 48-42 with a quarter to go.

The Squires would start the fourth with a bucket from Underwood and two free throws from Flack to cut the lead to 48-46 when Marcus Kroh, Dawes and Richardson hit three in a row to raise the lead back to 8 at 54-46. The Norse would out score the Squires 10-6 down the stretch, hitting free throws as the Squires fouled trying to play catch up for the 64-52 margin.

Collin Dawes led four Norse in double figures with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist, 2 steals. Jon Richardson had 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Ryan Keaffaber added 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assist, 6 steals. Tanner Wilcox had 10 points, 1 rebound. Carter Frieden had 3 points, 1 assist. Marcus Kroh had 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 2 steals. Adam Roser had 5 assist, 1 steal.

For Manchester Claudell Dickantone led with 18 points. Clayton Petrie added 12, Neil Underwood 10, Derek Flack 8, Chase Fierstos 2, Lucas Schilling 2.

Micah McDaniel hit a three pointer with 4 seconds left to lift Manchester to a 47-44 win in the junior varsity game.

McDaniel led the Squires with 26 points. Brayton Sewell added 7, Derek Flack 4, Rylie Rickert 4, Cameron Brandenburg 2, Austin Brewer 2, Rainer Borgmann 2.

For Northfield Jarred Short had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals.

Heath Miller/Hunter Louden/Nick Ridenour- 6 points each
