Lady Squires Open Sectional With A Bang

The Manchester Lady Squire basketball team let everyone know the four ranked teams in the Wabash sectional were not the only teams to be reckoned with as they scored the first 11 points in the game, while holding Lewis Cass to one bucket in the first half on their way to a 49-23 opening round sectional win over Cass.

Dominating the boards right from the start, Tabby DeWitt got the Squires going with two straight buckets off offensive rebounds to ignite the 11-0 run to start the game. Up 6-0 after a Kayla Flack bucket, Flack picked the pocket of a Lady King to feed DeWitt for a layup, then drained a three herself to put Manchester up 11-0. Cass finally found the bucket with 1:14 to play, with Kalene Freshour ending the quarter with a three and the Lady Squires were off and running 14-2 after one.

The Squires would keep the momentum going to start the second as Bekah Brunn hit. After a Cass free throw the Squires would go on a 6-0 run with points coming from Sydney Snep, DeWitt and Freshour to extend their lead to 22-3. Up 22-5 Kalene Freshour had the King player trapped between the half court and sidelines, with the King player trying to bounce the ball off Freshour. Freshour scopped up the bounce like a ground ball to hit Brunn who fed DeWitt for a layup just before the buzzer to lead 24-5 at the half.

Autumn Brewer would hit back to back buckets to start the third quarter before two Cass free throws, as the pace started to slow. DeWitt would convert a three point play when Cass would score the next six points to make it 31-13. Kalene Freshour would hit her third bucket of the game, followed by a Bekah Brunn bucket to lead 35-13 with under a minute to go. Cass would end the quarter with a three pointer to make it 35-16 after three.

Autumn Brewer would trade buckets with Cass to start the fourth quarter when Kalene Freshour went to work on the defensive end, getting a steal and feeding Brunn for a bucket, then hit a bucket herself on a steal. Kayla Flack then hit two in a row to open a 45-18 lead as the Lady Squires went on to the 49-23 win.

Leading Manchester was Kayla Flack with 13 points, 4 assist, 1 block, 6 rebounds. Tabby DeWitt had 13 points, 8 rebounds. Kalene Freshour had 9 points, 5 assist, 2 rebounds, 6 steals. Bekah Brunn had 6 points, 2 assist, 1 rebound, 3 steals. Autumn Brewer had 6 points, 9 rebounds. Sydney Snep had 2 points, 8 rebounds. Katelyn Parrett had 1 rebound.

Coach Underwood ” It was our best effort as a team all year. It was a total team effort, as we played a full 32 minutes. It’s nice to be peaking at the right time.”
