It was night two at the Wabash girls basketball sectional with three county teams going to battle. In game one the Wabash Lady Apaches and Southwood Lady Knights went to battle for the second time of the season, with Wabash avenging an earlier season loss to Southwood 43-35. In game two the Northfield Lady Norse were also out to get even. After losing to Oak Hill early in the season, the Lady Norse dominated the Eagles 47-32 to set up a rubber match with Wabash Friday night.
Game one between Wabash and Southwood was just as expected, a battle to the end. Wabash got off to a quick 4-0 start with buckets from Claire Cromer and Lyndsie Thomas before Katie Stouffer got the Knights on the board. The two teams would trade buckets and after a Sarah White free throw, Wabash led 8-7 with 1:59 to play. Kyleigh Hampton would hit a free throw for Wabash and the Apaches led 9-7 after the first stop.
To start the second quarter the Lady Knights came out pressing, with Wabash breaking the press and Hampton feeding Sarah Puckett for a bucket. Sarah White and Amy Bowman would then hit for Southwood to knot the game at 11, before a free throw and a Hampton three put the Apaches back up 15-11. The Lady Knights would then find their second wind with White hitting, followed by an offensive rebound bucket from Ana Marie Farlow to tie the game back up at 15. Kaley Harness would then drain a three for Southwood and the Knights had their first lead of the game, 18-15. With 1:00 to play, Hampton hit her second three of the quarter and the two teams headed for the locker room tied at 18.
The third quarter would start with Southwood going on a 6-0 run. Sarah white hit back to back buckets, with Kaley Harness connecting and the Lady Knights were up 24-18. Claire Cromer would stop the run with a three before Katie Stouffer hit Ana Marie Farlow on a back door lay up, with Southwood leading 28-21 with 2:55 left. Down 7, junior Kyleigh Hampton took over for the Apaches. Hampton drained a three pointer and with 1:21 left hit another three to give Wabash the lead back at 29-28. Hampton wasn’t done. After a made free throw, Claire Cromer fed Hampton for a buzzer beater bank shot and just like that Wabash led 32-28 after three.
Southwood would claw their way back to start the fourth. Ana Marie Farlow and Katie Stouffer hit to tie the score and after a Wabash time out, Sarah White gave the Knights the lead 34-32. After the two teams traded free throw, Hampton would drain her fifth three of the night with 2:06 remaining to give Wabash the lead back at 36-35. With .59 left, Claire Cromer converted an old fashion three, as the Apaches hit 8 of 12 free throws down the stretch for the 43-35 win.
Leading Wabash was Kyleigh Hampton with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks. Claire Cromer had 12 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assist. Lyndsie Thomas had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assist, 1 steal. Sarah Puckett had 2 points, 3 rebounds. Katelyn Vogel had 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal. Charlie Pardo had 1 rebound. Abby Stein had 4 rebounds.
For Southwood Sarah White had 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assist. Ana Marie Farlow had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals. Katie Stouffer had 5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 blocks. Kaley Harness had 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 6 steals. Amy Bowman had 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 steals. Mollie Harnish had 1 rebound, 3 blocks.
In game two Northfield was looking to avenge a one point loss to Oak Hill back in November and the Lady Norse wasted no time in making it happen.
Tied at 2, Sydney Eltzroth hit, followed by Sidney Reed connecting off a steal to put the Norse up 6-2. An Arie Kennedy bucket and an Eltzroth free throw would end the 8-0 run and Northfield led 9-2. After an Oak Hill bucket the Norse would score 5 straight off buckets from Reed and Eltzroth and a free throw from Kennedy to lead 14-7 after one.
After trading buckets to start the second quarter and leading 16-9 Northfield would go to work again. Arie Kennedy would hit two free throws that ignited the Norse second 8-0 run. Buckets from Eltzroth, Reed and Kennedy had the Norse up 24-9 with 3:20 to go, looking like they were going to run away with it. After an Oak Hill time out, the Lady Eagles would score the last 6 points of the quarter and Northfield led 24-15 at the half.
Not wanting Oak Hill to get any closer, the Norse would widen the gap in the third. Arie Kennedy would sandwich a free throw between a bucket from Kylie Echard and a three from Eltzroth to increase the lead to 30-17. After an Oak Hill free throw, Redd would connect with Kennedy finding Katie Stephan on a back door play to end the quarter, with Northfield leading 34-18 with a quarter to go.
Northfield would trade buckets with Oak Hill the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and led 38-23 with 4:10 to go when Oak Hill decided it was time to start fouling. Northfield would hit 7 free throws the last 2:38 to keep their 15 point lead and get even with the Eagles 47-32.
Leading Northfield was Sydney Eltzroth with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal. Arie Kennedy had 12 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist. Sidney Reed had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assist, 1 steal. Katie Stephan had 7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assist, 1 steal. Kylie Echard had 2 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 blocks.
