Squires Comeback Falls Short

The Manchester boys basketball team went on the road and trailed by double digits Saturday to Whitko after three quarters, only to manufacture a ferious comeback in the fourth, just falling short 50-48.

The Squires held their own with Whitko in the first, trailing just 11-9 after one. Clayton Petrie carried the load with three buckets for 6 points, with Claudell Dickantone adding a bucket.

The Whitko offense would pick it up in the second, but the Squires didn’t keep pace being out scored 17-7. Manchester could find the bucket just two times, once by Petrie and once by Lucas Schilling. The Squires trailed 28-16 at the half.

Petrie would lead the Squires in the third with 6 points, getting some help from Dickantone with a three and a bucket from Chase Fierstos, with both teams scoring 11 points. Whitko led 39-27 after three.

Down 12 heading to the fourth, the Squires needed to turn it loose. Manchester would bust loose for their largest quarter of the night, scoring 21 points, just 2 shy of forcing overtime. Chase Fierstos led the fourth quarter assault, hitting from behind the arch three times and scoring 11 points in the quarter. Dickantone and Schilling each added two buckets, with Petrie scoring once. Manchester ran out of time, falling 50-48.

Leading the Squires was Clayton Petrie with 17 points. Chase Fierstos added 15, Claudell Dickantone 9, Lucas Schilling 6 and Neil Underwood 1.

The junior varsity topped Whitko 36-20 with 10 players scoring.

Derek Flack led with 9 points. Micah McDaniel added 8, Rylie Rickert 5, Keelan Norwood 3, Cameron Brandenburg 2, Connor Eichenauer 2, Dalton Day 2, Austin Brewer 2, Rainer Borgmann 2, Owen Johnson 1.
