Norse Defend Home Court On Senior Night

It was the last home game for two Northfield seniors Tuesday and the Norse boys basketball team defended their home court with a 51-39 win over Maconaquah.

With both teams playing some stiffling defense and the Norse trying to figure out how to get around 6’10” Micah Pier, neither team could find the bucket for the first 2:25. With 5:35 on the clock Carter Frieden got the Norse on the board with a bucket that ignited an 11-0 run. After the Frieden bucket Collin Dawes would hit back to back three pointers and was followed by a Ryan Keaffaner three for the 11-0 lead. The 11-0 run would be all the Norse would get in the quarter, as they held the Braves to the last four points of the quarter and led 11-4.

Not being able to get the ball inside, the Norse would wear the Braves out from behind the three point line. After hitting three in the first quarter, Adam Roser would connect on the teams fourth to give the Norse a 16-6 lead. Keaffaber would add a bucket to extend the lead to 18-6. The Braves would cut the lead to 20-11 when Jon Richardson connected from behind the arch to open the lead back to 12 points. The Norse would keep their double digit lead and put icing on the cake when Keaffaber hit the Norse sixth three pointer with .02 on the clock to give Northfield a 31-17 halftime lead.

The pace of the game in the third would go back to the way the game started, with both team struggling to find the bucket. Collin Dawes hit to give Northfield a 33-17 lead before they went ice cold. With the offense having problems, the defense kept intense, holding Maconaquah to just two free throws and two buckets in the quarter. Marcus Kroh and Adam Roser ended the quarter with buckets, as the Norse led 37-23 with a quarter to go.

Maconaquah cut the lead to 38-28 early in the fourth before buckets from Kroh and Richardson gave them some breathing room. With the Norse up 44-30 the Braves would make things interesting. Maconaquah would score 7 straight and had the lead cut to 44-37 with .45 remaining. At that point the Braves were forced to foul, with Collin Dawes hitting the first two free throws to make it 46-37. After a Brave miss, they fouled again with Jon Richardson hitting one for a 10 point lead. Maconaquah cut it to 8, then fouled again with 18.7 left. Richardson would drain both free throws and after a Brave miscue Tanner Wilcox hit with 4.0 on the clock for the 51-39 win.

Leading Northfield was Ryan Keaffaber with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assist, 2 steals. Collin Dawes had 13 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assist, 3 steals. Jon Richardson had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Adam Roser had 5 points, 3 assist. Marcus Kroh had 4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals. Tanner Wilcox had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist.
