NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University picked up one win and narrowly missed in two other matches to close its 2012-13 dual season with a 44-3 loss to Mt. St. Joseph Thursday, Feb. 21.
The Spartans, bringing down the curtain on their dual slate at 1-14, were led by freshman 133-pounder Kalib Jackson (Rome City, Ind.). Jackson claimed his team-leading 16th win due to a pair of third period takedowns in a 9-3 decision over Eddie Sanders.
Coach Matt Burlingame’s squad almost added to their team point total at 197 and heavyweight. Sophomore Ray Wajda (North Judson, Ind.) battled Justin Meineke throughout the seven minutes, but a late second period takedown lifted Meineke to a 4-2 win. Junior heavyweight Jason Pedigo (Zionsville, Ind.) gave highly-touted Sean Brooks all he could handle, too. Pedigo trailed 3-2 late and tried several attempts in the final minute for a takedown, but Brooks held on for the win.
The Spartans break from competition to prepare for the 2013 NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals. The tournament is set for Saturday, March 2, at Elmhurst College’s R.A. Faganel Hall.
NOTES: Jackson captured his sixth win in his last nine matches. … Following the heavyweight match, 157-pounder Chuck Holmquest (Plymouth, Ind.) and 174-pounder Kurt Monix (Crown Point, Ind.) were recognized by the Spartan wrestling squad for Senior Night 2013.
