The Southwood and Manchester varsity softball teams hooked up Monday in an inter county battle, with the Knights Logan Hensey blasting a three run shot that lifted Southwood over Manchester 5-1.
With Jenny Bentley on the mound the Lady Knights were looking for their second TRC win. In the top of the first with one out Manchester’s Kalene Freshour roped a triple down the right field line, with Bentley battling back with a strike out and a grounder to get out of the inning. The Knights would do most of their damage in the bottom of the inning. Mikayla Metter got things going with a single that was followed by a bunt single from Skylar Chain. After a ground out Logan Hensley stepped to the plate, sending a shot over the left center field fence that headed towards state road 124 to give Southwood a 3-0 lead.
For the next three innings it would be a pitchers dual between Jenny Bentley and Jimenez .
In the top of the fifth, Manchester’s Sydney Snep would match Hensley with the long ball, leading off with a dinger to make the score 3-1. Bentley would walk two in the inning, but managed to escape giving up just the one run. The Knights would respond in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice to increase the lead to 5-1. Mettler and Bentley singled, with Mettler scoring on Bentley’s hit. After a Logan Hensley single advanced pinch runner Kate Baxter to second, Courtney Simpson singled to score Baxter.
Bentley would hold the Squires in check the remaining two innings for the Southwood 5-1 win
Bentley went 7 innings, giving up 2 hits, striking out 12 and walking 3.
Jimenez went 6 innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out 3.
