Sailors Pitches Tech To National Tournament

sailorsGrand Rapids, Mich. – The Indiana Tech baseball team fell behind early in the 2013 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament championship game against No. 19 Madonna University, but didn’t panic, scoring ten unanswered runs to claim their fourth title in the last five years.

Madonna (36-9), the tournament’s No. 1-seed, defeated Tech 3-1 in the first game of the day to force the “if necessary,” winner take all game. In the deciding game, the Crusaders plated single runs in the first and second inning, but the Warriors scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score.

Indiana Tech broke the game open though in the third with a grand slam off the bat of senior Ignatius Mackenzie (Waipahu, HI/Waipahu) as the Warriors rolled to a 10-2 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Zach Sailors (Wabash, IN/Wabash H.S.) was spectacular tossing his second career complete game in the win. After surrendering the early runs, the right-hander settled in throwing seven scoreless frames while striking out six.

Indiana Tech (31-16) secures the WHAC’s automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament with the win. The tournament’s opening round games will be played May 9-13 at one of nine host sites. The brackets for the National Championship Opening Round will be announced on May 5.

  1. Zach did a great job and the game was exciting to watch especially with two of the team members being from a small town. GREAT JOB ZACH AND TYLER DENNISTON.
