Ball State’s baseball team tallied a 4-0 Mid-American Conference win at home over the Toledo Rockets to improve to 12-10 in league play and 25-20 overall.
Scott Baker improved his pitching record to 10-1 on the season with a complete game, three hit victory. His 10 wins ties for the second best single season total in Ball State history. Baker went the distance and struck out one, while allowing only three singles on the day. He entered the contest ranked ninth in the nation in pitching wins. Baker’s effort came against the Rockets, who were leading the MAC with a .290 team batting average. He limited Toledo to three hits in 30 at-bats for a .100 hitting mark.
Billy Wellman opened the second inning with a single to left field, and Blake Beemer followed with a singl to right. After Weir flied out for the first out of the inning, Beemer stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the UT catcher, which also scored Wellman. Tidaback came to the plate and hit his second HR of the season to give Ball State a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Weir stepped to the plate with one out and hit his fourth HR of the year to give the Cardinals an insurance run and a 4-0 lead.
Godfrey was 2-for-4 on the day, while Tidaback was 2-for-4 with two runs-batted-in and one run scored. Weir was 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Elbert Devarie managed his second two-hit game in a row and was 2-for-3 from the plate.
Ball State is second in the MAC West Division with five league games remaining. The Cardinals will host Toledo Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Ball State will play a non-league midweek game at Indiana State Tuesday before hosting MAC West leader Northern Illinois in three games next Thursday through Saturday at Ball Diamond.
