The Metro Rage JV and Varsity teams traveled to Fort Wayne on Thursday night to play the Fort Wayne Fusion.
The Rage JV team came away with a 2-0 win in the early game. German exchange student Marvin Weiss (NHS) let loose a shot from outside the 18 yard box two minutes into the game which the Fusion goalkeeper had no chance of stopping. Tyler Profitt (SES), who made his first appearance with the high school team, recorded a goal at the 28 minute mark to round out the scoring.
Rage Coach Lindsey Schenkel commented that “this JV game was a great opportunity for our younger guys to play an established team like the Fusion. We were excited to see how well our team played and how much they have progresses since their last game”
The Rage varsity battle with the Fusion through 33 minutes of intense soccer before Zach Hobson (SHS) broke the tie when he found the back of the net on a Colton Dawes (SHS) pass through the box. The Rage took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Dawes would score what became the game winner 6 minutes into the second half when he drilled a perfectly located shot in the upper 90 of the back post. Marvin Weiss scored his second goal of the night from just inside the 18 yard box at the 59 minute mark of the game to give the Rage their final goal of the night. Graham Shrock scored the lone goal of the night for the Fusion at the 68 minute mark.
Rage Coach Jeff Hobson was very pleased with the outcome. “I have to say that is about the best 80 minutes of soccer I’ve see this group play. I love playing the Fusion because it is always a good indicator of where we are at as a team. They are well coached and play the possession game better than any team we have played in recent years” Hobson went on to say that “our back four played incredible all night. Trey Eads, Andrew Eckerly, Brady Bolen and Kyle Heiser played the best I have seen them play as a defensive unit. Those four are all Northfield kids so I guess I should thank Northfield for their contribution to our win”
Hobson also lauded the play of Colton Dawes, Noah Shear (SHS) and Josh Hobson (SHS) in the midfield. “Games are won and lost in the midfield. I thought these three set the tone all night with their constant pressure on defense and precise passing.”
Rage goalkeeper Julian Hobson (WHS) had another outstanding night in goal and recorded 10 saves in the game.
The Rage travel to Indianapolis Saturday to play Indy Northwest in an 11am varsity game. The JV team will travel to North Manchester on September 11th to play the JV Squires.
