Lady Eagles To Tall For Squires

The Manchester varsity volleyball team was swept by Columbia City 10-25, 23-25, 9-25 Tuesday.

With a front line of 6’2” and two more at 6′ the Columbia City volleyball team had more height than the Lady Squires could handle. With two division one players on the floor the Eagles were in charge with Manchester giving them a headache in game two.

Game one started out with Columbia City jumping out to a quick 11-1 lead before Kendra Binkley and Leah Sorg recorded kills to stop the run. Corrie Osborne would nail a kill with Binkley getting two more as the Eagles cruised in game one 25-10.

The Lady Squires came out with a new mission in game two, playing scrappy and tall to give Columbia City a scare. A kill from Binkley and two kills from Sydney Snep put the Squires up 5-2 before the Eagles clawed their way back to take a 7-6 lead. The Lady Squires wouldn’t bow down however, as Rae Bedke served an ace in a 5-1 run that put Manchester back up 11-8.  Up 11-10, Marrett Metzger recorded a kill from the back row that sparked a three point run as the Squires led 14-10. The taller Eagles would start pounding the ball to the middle, eventually taking a 16-15 lead that they wouldn’t give up. Snep and Osborne would have kills to keep Manchester close, but the Lady Squires couldn’t get over the hump falling 23-25.

In game three after a Sydney Snep kill tied the game at one, Columbia City would use three runs that closed the door. At 7-6 the Eagles would score five in a row and seven of the next eight points to open a 14-7 lead. Cierra Carter would stop the run with a kill before another four point Eagle run. Kendra Bunkley recorded a kill to make it 18-9, when Columbia City ran the table for a 25-9 win.

Rae Bedke ended the night with 18 assists.  In the front row, Sydney Snep and Kendra Binkley led the team with 5 kills each. Corrie Osborne and Ceirra Carter each had 3, Leah Sorg had 2, and Marret Metzger had 1 kill from the back row.  Back row was helped along by Metzger with 8 digs and freshman Ellie Milam with 7 digs. Snep had 4 digs while Kaitlyn Parrett and Rae Bedke each had 3. Carter had 2 and both Kiana Gillum and Sorg had 1 dig. The only ace of the night goes to Rae Bedke.
