The Northfield Lady Norse varsity volleyball team was out dueled by Huntington Tuesday 23-25, 22-25, 25-27.
The Norse got off to a good start in game one with Abigail Poole getting things going with an ace. After an Elaina Terrell kill made it 2-0 the Norse would race out to a 6-3 lead before the Vikings came firing back. Huntington would score 5 straight points to take an 8-6 lead before a serve out of bounds. After the miscue the Vikings would go on a 6-0 run to open a 13-7 lead, when Cherish Leming stopped the run with a kill. The Lady Norse would claw their way back, getting kills from Arie Kennedy, Terrell and a block from Kylie Echard to cut the lead to 15-13. Huntington would build the lead back to 21-16 when the Norse made another move. A kill from Holly Dyson and an ace from Echard along with some Viking errors got the Norse back to within one at 21-20. Down 23-21 Liz Howenstine and Terrell would drive home kills to knot the score at 23. Huntington would score the last two points to win game one 25-23.
Again in game two Huntington would race out to an early lead. The Vikings led 12-6 when the Norse started to chip away. Kills from Leming, Kennedy and Echard got the deficit to 16-13. Huntington would score three in a row before Northfield went on a 5-0 run. A kill and an ace from Echard made it 19-18. Huntington would score five of the next seven points to lead 24-20 when the Norse scored two straight aided by a Terrell kill. The Vikings would end game two on a kill for a 25-22 win and led 2-0.
Northfield would control the first half of game three, jumping out to a 6-3 lead and eventually building the lead to 14-8 on a Terrell kill. Holly Dyson’s kill made it 17-12 when Huntington made their move. The Vikings would score five straight to tie the score at 17 before the Norse made a run. Northfield would score four straight with Leming and Terrell getting kills to lead 21-17. After three Viking points, Liz Howenstine would tip a shot just over the net to lead 22-20 and a Terrell kill made it 23-21. Huntington would tie the score at 23, then give the Norse a point for a 24-23 lead. Tied at 24 Kylie Echard notched a kill to give Northfield a 25-24 lead when the Vikings went on a 3-0 run to end the game 27-25 and the night 2-0.
Elaina Terrell led the offense with 9 kills on the night, and Kylie Echard and Cherish Leming both tallied 5 each. Tori Snyder added 4 and Holly Dyson had 3 kills. Echard also picked up 3 solo blocks, 3 aces, 8 points and 9 digs. Liz Howenstine set up the offense with 29 assists. Arie Kennedy led the defense with 33 digs and 21 good receptions. Marlee Stefanatos had 10 receptions and Abigail Poole had 9. Both added 6 digs each. Poole also added 8 points and an ace.
