Squire Tennis Keeps Rolling

New Sam Squire - CopyThe Manchester boys tennis team kept things rolling Monday, topping Columbia City 4-1 to improve their season record to 9-2.

At #1 singles Connor Eichenauer lost 7-5, 4-6, 1-6

At #2 single Max Karg won 6-1, 6-0

At #3 singles Brayton Spann won 6-0, 6-0

At #1 doubles Morgan Metzger/Noah Cain won 6-0, 6-0

At #2 doubles Dalton Day/Branden Scott won by default

Max Karg improved to 13-1 on the season with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win.  At 3 singles Brayton Spann won without dropping a game, as did the 1 doubles team of Morgan Metzger and Noah Cain, taking only 30 minutes to defeat their opponents.  Columbia City did not field a 2 doubles team (so Manchester won by default) nor a JV team.  With only 2 returning players from last years squad, Columbia does posses one of the best singles players in the area.  In the match of the night, Connor nearly knocked off Nicco Rongos in a 2 ½ hour match.  Rongos has lost only once this year while Eichenauer moves to 9-4. Connor  started by winning a close first set 7-5 featuring pounding serves and long baseline rallies.  In the second set, Eichenauer was up 3-1 and nearly took control facing 2 game points for a 4-1 lead before Rongos rallied to win 5 straight games.  Eichenauer, down 3-5, won the next game and had one break point to even it up 5 all, but Rongos won a long duece game to take set two 6-4.  Then next set ended under the lights with Rongos winning all the close games and the set 6-1.

“This was our first victory against Columbia City in at least 7 years and our program is trending the right direction.  Despite the loss, Connor played very well at times tonight and we look forward to his and our 2 seniors’ leadership going into our final 2 conference matches.  We hope to get a good home crowd out to watch a great team of guys.  Teams like this don’t come around often, so we are enjoying the success.”-Joel Eichenauer
