Southwood Out Battles Northfield In Volleyball Action

It was the typial Southwood, Northfield varsity volleyball match up Tuesday at Northfield. The gym was full and the booster blocks were revved up, making it one noisy atmosphere. With one game going extra points the Lady Knights of Southwood won a four game thriller 25-23, 25-16, 27-29, 25-17.

The nerves played havoc in the first half of game one, as neither team could score more than two points in a row, with most of the points coming on errors by the other team. The first run came with Southwood leading 13-9 when Northfield would string four straight points to knot the score at 13. The Lady Knights would respond with a five point run of their own to go up 18-13. Back came Northfield to cut the lead to one. The two teams would trade blows and with the score tied at 23, Southwood would score the final two for a 25-23 game one win.

The Norse would go to Kylie Echard early in game two, with Echard recording a kill and a block to give Northfield a 4-2 lead. Drew Rhamy would then get a kill and  serve an ace to tie the score. The game would go back and forth with neither team scoring more than one point until Northfield led 12-11. Lexi Brickner would then take over for Southwood with two kills and two blocks as the Lady Knights scored six straight to lead 17-12. Tori Snyder would get a kill for Northfield to break the run, but the Knights behind Brickner and Kaitlyn Murphy would score six of the next eight points to lead 23-15. After a Norse point, Murphy would get a kill and Rhamy a block to end game two 25-16.

Game three was a classic. It was punch and counter punch early with Echard and Brickner battling at the net. Northfield’s Elaina Terrill and Southwood’s Emilie Harnish would get kills and Northfield led 13-11. At that point it looked as though Southwood might run away with game three. Getting a tip from Sami White the Lady Knights scored six straight to take a 17-13 lead, but the Norse responded. With a kill from Terrill and a block from Echard, Northfield would string four points in a  row to make it 17-17. Amy Bowman would get a kill as Southwood went up 19-17 before Tori Snyder ignited a three point Northfield run with a kill to give the Norse a 20-19 lead. Back came the Knights, scoring five straight behind a kill and an ace from Brickner to lead 24-20 when it was Northfield’s turn. The Norse would force five straight Knight errors to take the lead back at 25-24. The game would be tied at 25 and 27 when Echard slammed home a kill, then blocked the final point as Northfield forced a game four 29-27.

Northfield would jump out to a 3-1 lead in game four before the Knights fought back. With Northfield leading 6-5 after an Echard kill, Southwood would go on a six point run. Brickner started the run with a kill, with Sarah Peters adding two kills. The Lady Knights would hold a five to six point lead until 22-17 when they would score three in a row, the final point coming on a Murphy block to win game four 25-17 and the match 3-1.

For Southwood Lexi Brickner had 7 service points, 4 aces, 15 kills, 5 digs, 4 blocks. Delayne Gentry had 2 digs. Sami White had 5 service points, 2 aces, 4 kills, 24 assist, 2 blocks, 4 digs. Sarah Peters had 6 service points, 3 kills, 1 block, 7 digs. Kaitlyn Murphy had 10 kills, 1 block, 1 dig, 1 assist. Emilie Harnish had 4 service points, 4 kills, 1 block , 6 digs. Amy Bowman had 15 service points, 1 kill, 13 assist, 7 digs. Drew Rhamy had 13 service points, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 2 assist, 13 digs.

For Northfield Arie Kennedy led the defense with 32 receptions and 30 digs. Kylie Echard picked up 12 kills, 15 digs, 4 solo blocks, and 11 receptions. Holly Dyson added 8 points and 7 kills. Elaina Terrell and Tori Snyder had 6 and 4 kills respectively. Liz Howenstine set up 29 assists and added 6 digs. Marlee Stefanatos had12 receptions and 5 digs. Abigail Poole added 6 digs, 17 receptions and 5 points. Terrell added 6 points as well. Howenstine and Cherish Leming added one kill each.
