It was night two of the North Miami volleyball sectional and it was the Southwood Lady Knights and Wabash Lady Apaches turn to take the court. Both county teams would win in sweeps to set up a showdown for Saturday. Southwood cruised past Lewis Cass 25-13, 25-15, 25-17, while Wabash took care of North Miami 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.
Southwood was up first and made short work of Cass. The Lady Knights set the tone right off the bat, racing out to a 6-1 lead and eventually leading 14-3, never looking back. During the run Lexi Brickner would record 5 kills and a block with Drew Rhamy adding 2 kills. After Brickner and Rhamy got things going, Kaitlyn Murphy and Amy Bowman would take over, each recording 2 kills. Sami White added an ace as Southwood cruised to a 25-13 win.
The Knights stubbed their toes a little to start game 2 and were tied 7-7 when they found their rhythm. Forcing Cass errors and getting a kill from Sarah Peters the Knights would score 6 straight and 13 of the next 15 points to jump out to a 20-9 lead. Rhamy would add a kill and a block during the run. Cass would peck away and cut the lead to 23-15 before the Knights scored on a bad serve and ended the game on a Sami White kill, 25-15.
Again it was a fast start in game three. After falling behind 0-1 the Knights would go on a 5-1 run and a 6-0 run to lead 11-2. During the run Brickner would get three kills, plus one from Drew Rhamy. Rhamy and Emilie Harnish would serve aces during the run. The Knights would build their lead to 17-5 before they took their foot off the pedal, cruising to a 25-17 win.
Wabash would also win in three, with game one being up for grabs before the Lady Apaches took control. Game one was a thriller with the game being tied 10 times. Lyndsie Thomas would get the Apaches going with 2 kills as Wabash got out to a 4-2 lead. The Apaches would continue to go to Thomas early, while neither team could score more than two points in a row. Up 9-8 Kyleigh Hampton got in on the action, pounding back to back kills and Wabash was up 12-9. Back came North Miami to knot the score at 12, with the game being tied six more times until 23-23. Thomas would then bang home a kill and Claire Cromer served an ace as the Apaches escaped game one 25-23.
Wabash got off to a rocky start in game two, falling behind 4-8 before they started to roll. At 5-8 and Shelby Stone serving the Apaches would go on a 9-0 run to open a 14-8 lead. During the run Hampton would get three kills with Kristin Cromer adding a kill and Stone an ace. Feeding Hampton and Thomas the Apaches built the lead to 21-12, ending the game on a Jaycee Parrett kill to win game two 25-18.
Again the Apaches would dominate game three. Tied at 3 Thomas and Sarah Ritter would go to work. Thomas nailed a kill while Ritter scored on a block to lead 11-4. Wabash would hold their seven point lead until 17-10 when they put the game out of reach, scoring six straight. Taking advantage of Warrior errors and getting two kills from Thomas, Wabash built their lead to 23-10. North Miami would try to make things interesting, scoring 6 of the next 7 points to make it 24-16 before Ritter ended the night with a kill, 25-16.
Southwood and Wabash will play each other Saturday in game two. Northfield takes on Oak Hill in game one at 11:00.
