Lady Knights Are Semi State Bound

After winning their 7th straight sectional crown in a row Saturday, the Southwood Lady Knight volleyball team took it one step further Tuesday, winning their 6th straight regional in a 25-12, 25-15, 25-23 sweep of Clinton Central.

The Knights would dominate games one and two before struggling early in game three when a six point run put them in the drivers seat, hanging on for the 3-0 sweep.

Kaitlyn Murphy would get the night started with a kill and after a Sami White ace and a kill from Drew Rhamy the Knights led 4-1. Clinton Central would then find a little rhythm and take advantage of some Southwood miscues to close the gap to 10-8. Sami White would guide a tip just over the net and serve an ace and the Knights were off and running. With kills from Drew Rhamy, Lexi Brickner and a ace from Emilie Harnish the lead grew to 20-11. After giving the Bulldogs a point the Knights would get a kill from Brickner that ignited a 5-0 run on their way to a 25-12 win.

The Southwood run to end game one continued to start game two. Forcing several Clinton Central errors and getting a block from Brickner and a kill from Amy Bowman the Knights raced out to a 10-3 lead. Again the Bulldogs would chew away at the Southwood lead, eventually trimming the margin to 15-12. Southwood would then score four in a row that was highlighted by a Brickner block as they would feed Sarah Peters on the left side and build the lead to 23-14. The Knights would get their last two points on Bulldog errors to win game two 25-15 and led the night 2-0.

Up 2-0 and maybe relaxing a little to start game three, the Knights got off to a bad start. The good thing was they were playing bad, but remaining close. With Southwood up 4-3 a series of errors mixed with three Bulldog kills gave Clinton Central a 6-12 lead. The Knights would then find who had the hot hand with Drew Rhamy collecting five kills to draw the Knights to within one at 13-14, with Clinton Central keeping the lead at one until 16-17. As the Knights often do, a major run would seal the deal or so everyone thought. Rhamy would connect on another kill with Brickner following with a block. Sami White would then add to the run with one of her patented tips for a point and was followed by a Sarah Peters kill. After a Bulldog error, White would place another tip to an empty floor and the Knights led 22-17. After a Drew Rhamy kill Southwood led 24-19 and the booster block was chanting warm up the bus, but the Bulldogs were not ready yet. Clinton Central would then go on a 4-0 run to make it 24-23 and was serving. After the Knight return didn’t score the Bulldogs set up a spike that Sami White & Amy Bowman blocked to end the night 25-23 and 3-0.

Lexi Brickner had 8 kills, 3 blocks, 6 digs. Sami White had 7 service points, 2 aces, 4 kills, 13 assist, 3 blocks, 6 digs. Bailey Hobbs had 10 service points, 1 ace. Sarah Peters had 4 service points, 4 kills, 8 digs. Kaitlyn Murphy had 4 kills, 3 blocks. Emilie Harnish had 12 service points, 1 ace, 5 digs, 1 assist. Amy Bowman had 4 service points, 2 kills, 14 assist, 6 blocks, 7 digs. Drew Rhamy had 5 service points, 1 ace, 16 kills, 11 digs.

The Lady Knights are now headed to the Bremen semi-state Saturday, where they will take on Woodlan who was a 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 winner over Westview. The Knights play in game two. Madison Grant and Hammond Bishop Noll tangle in game one.
