In game one of the Lewis Cass baseball sectional against Cass Saturday the Southwood baseball team let everyone know they were a team to be reckoned with. Monday in the championship game against Oak Hill the Knights reminded all that they are for real, cruising past the Eagles 8-2 to lay claim on their first title in 10 years.
Sophomore pitcher Clay Hinrichsen scattered 7 hits over 6 1-3 innings as the Knight offense went to work.
Oak Hill led off the game with a double and a bunt single and eventually had runners on first and third with two outs when a line drive shot to center was caught by a diving Jackson Blair to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning Blair led off being hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. With one out Robbie Cole was also hit by a pitch. Christian Deeter then singled home Blair for the first run of the game and the Knights led 1-0.
Hinrichsen would give up a lead off single in the second before three ground ball outs to get the Knights back up to bat. The dagger was shoved half way in by the Knights in the bottom of the inning when Brennan Kelly led off with a solo shot over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead, but the Knights were not done. With one out Zach Ball drew a walk and on a botched pick off went to second. One pitch later Ball was on third from a wild pitch before Blair drew a walk. Blair would steal second right before Nathan Hollars laced a 2 rbi double down the left field line for a 4-0 lead. The Knights had runners on the corners before a grounder and a fly out ended the inning.
Hinrichsen got out of a minor jam in the third when after a single a pick off throw went wild with the runner going to second. Hinrichsen struck out the next batter then forced a ground out to escape. The Knights couldn’t capitalize in the bottom of the inning as the score remained 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth the Knights stuck the dagger the rest of the way in as they scored 3 runs to take a 7-0 lead. With one out Nathan Hollars doubled, then scored on a pick off that went wrong for a 5-0 lead. Robbie Cole then layed down a bunt that the pitcher couldn’t handle and stole second. Christian Deeter then hit a dribbler down third, using his blazing speed to beat the throw to put runners on the corners. Pinch runner Will Roberts then stole second before Jacob Lloyd hit a 2 rbi single for the 7-0 lead.
Oak Hill picked up a run in the 5th, but the Knights got it back in the 6th. Robbie Cole drew a walk and stole second before a Christian Deeter walked. Cole was then picked off second, followed by a Jacob Lloyd single. After a wild pitch Brandin Frazier singled home the 8th Knight run for an 8-1 lead with three outs to go.
Hinrichsen struck out the first Eagle batter in the 7th but then gave up a walk and a single before hitting a batter to load the bases. Brennan Kelly then took the mound, striking out the first batter he faced for two outs. A catchers interference call forced in a run for Oak Hill to make it 8-2. The next batter hit a one hopper to third with Brandin Frazier snatching it up and stomping on third in celebration of a sectional championship.
With the win Southwood will play in the Wabash regional Saturday. The first game is at 11:00 with the winners from Frankton and South Vermillion playing each other. Southwood will play Elwood at 1:00.
