The Squire tennis team took to the road to face a determined Bluffton Tiger team that returned 6 of 7 players from last years competitive team. Having won last year 3-2, Manchester expected another close match and the opening set turned out exactly that. With 4 of 5 positions close early on, the experience and skill of the Manchester team became evident. The only lopsided match was at 2 singles where Max Karg had little trouble winning in just over 30 minutes, giving up only one game. “Max played so well his opponent could never gain any momentum.” The doubles duo of Branden Scott and Noah Cain notched the second Squire win. After a tight set one where they won 7-5, they took control of the final set for a 6-2 victory. “Both guys played inspired tennis using power and placement along with intensity and communication to seal their win.” Just
minutes later, number one singles senior Connor Eichenauer sealed the team win, 6-4, 6-2. “Connor used a wide variety of shots and strategies to counter the skilled Bluffton opponent. Connor really closed out the first set and kept the pressure on winning 6 straight games enroute to a 3-0 set 2 lead.” At two doubles, Matthew Pegg and Heath Dierks went up against a pair of seniors. Despite a stronger set two, Manchester lost the match. Meanwhile, at third singles, fellow senior Brayton Spann struggled in set one losing 2-6 to an athletic, gutsy Bluffton player. “After some strategy adjustments, Spann regrouped nicely and figured out a way to win set two, 6-3.” With the team victory in hand, a super tiebreaker was played in lieu of a full third set in which Brayton prevailed 10-8. The matched ended 4-1 to raise the Squire record to 5-1. Manchester travels to Huntington North on Thursday at 4:30.
