Squires Edge Norwell In Tennis Action

The Squire netters hosted Norwell in a first time matchup. Manchester prevailed with a close 3-2 victory behind wins at 1 and 2 singles as well as 2 doubles. Max Karg cruised to a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory. “Max is playing great tennis and really winning with ease. His combination of attacking net play and defensive baseline shots make him almost unbeatable.” Norwell countered with a dynamic duo at first doubles, handing Branden Scott and Noah Cain their first defeat this season. But Manchester’s 2 doubles team of Brayton Spann and Matthew Pegg won 12 straight games after dropping the opener. “Brayton added his great leadership and confidence to Matthew’s strong strokes, and they played very well considering the new combination.” Heath Dierks stepped into the 3 singles position and pushed his opponent to many deuces and long games. Despite losing 1-6, 1-6, the match was really close. “We were proud of Heath’s competitiveness and mental composure considering this was his first varsity singles match.” With the match tied 2-2, Connor Eichenauer was just ending a marathon opening set. Down 1-4, Eichenauer rallied with 4 straight games and was 2 points for set victory, when his opponent surged to go up 6-5. Eichenauer forced a 6-6 tiebreaker but lost 3-7. The Squire senior regrouped and won the next 6 close games to even the score at 1 set apiece. The third set began with a long deuce game going in Norwell’s favor, but Eichenauer took the next two. The players held serve until Eichenauer led 4-3. Then the four year top singles player scored a critical service break and then won his service game to take the set 6-3 and match. And that notched the third victory for the team win. “Connor played nearly 3 hours in a competitive match with very long rallies and points. It came down to mental toughness and just wanting the win more than his opponent.” “This was a great team win against a quality opponent.”
In JV action Braxtin Wilson kept improving by pushing his senior opponent. “Braxtin is a quick learner and super athlete that with hard work will keep learning this game.”
