Northfield and Manchester did battle in volleyball action Tuesday at Manchester with the Lady Norse pulling out a 26-24, 22-25, 25-9, 25-20 win.
The Norse jumped out to a 4-2 lead on kills from Cassidy Miller, Holly Dyson and Cherish Leming before the Lady Squires caught fire. Corrie Osborne would collect a kill that started a 6 point run to give Manchester an 8-4 lead. During the run Cierra Carter had two kills with Leah Sorg adding a kill. The Norse cut the Squire lead to 11-8 with kills from Miller and Tori Snyder when Manchester ran again. Madison Isbell and Kendra Binkley had back to back blocks for points that started a 6-0 run to give the Lady Squires a commanding 17-8 lead, but the Norse weren’t done. Arie Kennedy would stop the Manchester run with a kill and collect one more kill along with Snyder as the Norse started to chip away. Down 19-11 the Norse would take advantage of a Leming kill along with a couple Manchester errors to cut the Squire lead to 19-15 before a Marret Metzger kill. The Norse would score 5 of the next 6 game points to cut the lead to 21-20 when Kendra Binkley nailed a kill to make it 22-20. The two teams would trade points and eventually the game was tied at 23 when Binkley gave the Squires a 24-23 lead with a kill. The Norse would then score three consecutive points on kills from Kennedy and Snyder before a second Kennedy kill to end game one 26-24.
Game two would be just as exciting as the first when Manchester jumped out to an early 8-3 lead getting kills from Binkley, Carter and Sorg and an ace from Ellie Milam on a 7-0 run. Northfield would answer with a 5-0 run to knot the score at 8 on kills from Leming, Miller and Snyder. Back would run the Squires, this time with 5 straight, getting a kill from Binkley and taking advantage of Norse errors. Manchester would hold the lead until 18-12 when the Norse reeled off 5 straight to tie the score at 18. The Squires would score 4 of the next 5 game points to grab a 22-19 lead when the Norse scored 3 straight. Tied at 22 Manchester would get a kill from Carter and set off a 3 point run to give Manchester game two 25-22.
The Norse, who can be powerful at times flexed their muscle in game three, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and never taking their foot off the gas. With Leming, Miller and Snyder dominating the net the Norse would build a 9-1 lead and continually out scored Manchester 2 to 1 and 4 to 1 to take game three 25-9. Miller and Leming each had 4 kills in the game with Snyder collecting 2 aces.
Manchester got the good start in game four, getting a kill form Carter and an ace from Rae Bedke to grab a 4-0 lead. Manchester built the lead to 9-3 when the Norse got going. Arie Kennedy would record two kills and the Norse got an ace from Liz Howenstine to cut the Manchester lead to 9-8. Corrie Osborne would get a kill to put Manchester up 12-11 when the Squires went through a rough period and the Norse scoring four straight to take a 15-12 lead. Off two Carter kills the Lady Squires would fight their way back to tie the score at 16 when Cassidy Miller drilled a kill and the Norse went up 18-16. Rae Bedke would then place a tip[ to the corner for a point and again the score was tied at 18. Two Kennedy kills and one from Snyder gave Northfield a 21-19 lead before a Squire point made it 21-20. Aided by a Cassidy Miller kill Northfield would score 4 straight to end game four 25-20 and the night 3-1.
For Northfield Cherish Leming had 8 kills, 1 solo block, and 2 assisted blocks. Marlee Stefanatos had 31 digs and 20 good serve receptions. Tori Snyder had 6 kills, 5 aces, 2 assisted blocks, and 1 solo block. Arie Kennedy had 8 kills, 18 digs, and 12 good serve receptions. Liz Howenstine had 39 assists, 8 digs, and an ace. Cassidy Miller had 11 kills and 5 digs. Abigail Poole and Paige Holley weren’t letting anything drop I the back row.

Northfield won the junior varsity contest 25-22, 25-21.
