The Northfield volleyball team hosted 3A, #9 Mississinewa for senior night and their final game of the regular season Monday, falling to the Indians 17-25, 25-17, 19-25, 19-25.
Mississinewa got off to a good start in game one, grabbing a 9-3 lead that the Norse could just never make up. Northfield had one run that cut the Indians lead to one at 13-12 before the visitors took off again. Down 12-7 Cherish Leming knocked home a kill that ignited a 5-1 run for the Norse. Leming had two kills during the run. At 15-12 the Indians would score two points for every one of the Norse for the 19-25 final.
It looked like game two would be more of the same as game one when Mississsinewa grabbed a 3-0 lead when the Norse rebounded. Holly Dyson would get a kill along with Leming to make it 3-5 when the Norse went running. Tori Snyder banged home a kill that was followed by and Arie Kenedy block and kill as the Norse scored five straight to take an 8-5 lead. After an Indian tip the Norse would out score Mississinewa 6-2 to increase their lead to 14-8. During the run Snyder had a block, a kill and an ace. Mississinewa would close the gap to 15-13 when Cassisdy Miller drove one home, followed by Leming and the Norse led 18-13. At 19-16 Miller would kill again as Northfield scored five straight on their way to a 25-17 win and knotted the match 1-1.
Again it was Mississinewa getting the good start in game three, grabbing a 6-1 lead before the Norse started to peck away. A block from Leming and Miller made it 4-6, but the Indians answered and led 6-11. With Liz Howenstine serving the Norse got a kill from Kennedy and one from Snyder during a 6-1 run that tied the score at 12 when the Indians pulled away. Mississinewa would score six in a row and nine of the next eleven points to open a 15-22 lead, but the Norse were not done. After an Indian serve in the net Tori Snyder would hammer a kill that was followed by an Arie Kennedy kill and a Snyder block to cut the lead to 19-22 before Mississinewa scored the last three for a 19-25 win and led the Norse 2-1.
The theme of the night for Northfield was a bad start and again in game four it happened. Mississinewa jumped out to a 1-5 lead before things changed. A Snyder kill ignited a 4-0 run as the Norse scored six of the next eight to grab a 9-8 lead. Back came the Indians, scoring five of the next six to go up 11-14 when Cherish Leming killed while Abigail Poole served an ace and the score was 14-14. The Norse remained close until 18-20 when the Indians scored four straight to grab an 18-24 lead and went on to win game four 19-25 and the night 1-3.
