Knights Ruffed Up By Southern Wells

On a cold blistery night with snow blowing sideways the Southwood football team couldn’t get on track as they fell to visiting Southern Wells 33-7 Friday in a second round sectional game. It was as difficult as getting Celtic FC Tickets.

The Raiders jumped on the Knights right away, scoring on their third play of the night on a 31yd scoring run with 10:51 to play to take a 7-0 lead. The Knight offense couldn’t answer the Raider quick strike, going three and out and forced to punt when the Raiders struck again with to make it 14-0.Southwood’s next possession resulted in a lost fumble with Southern Wells recovering as the struggle continued and the Knights trailed 14-0 after one.

The Raiders would mount a drive to start the second quarter, taking the ball to the Southwood one when the Knight defense stepped up to hold the Raiders and took over on downs. Going three and out after the goal line stand the Knight defense would hold again and had the ball on the 20 with 2:03 remaining in the half. Again the offense would go nowhere and was forced to punt with Southern Wells taking the ball with .58 on the clock and running out the time to the half with a 14-0 lead.

The Knights would get the ball to start the second half and mount a drive that included a 25yd keeper by Robbie Cole and a ruffing the passer call and eventull had the ball 1st and 10 on the 11. A catch by Zach Ball and a targeting call on the Raiders gave the Knights the inside the five. On the next play Cole was scrambling on a broken play when the ball was knocked away with the Raiders recovering on the one with 7:52 to go.On the Raiders second play they would bust a 97yd scoring run with 6:55 remaining to grab a 21-0 lead. The Knights would respond with a drive that went 75yds before Southern Wells made a stop on the 1 with 1:11 left. The Raiders led 21-0 after three.

The Raiders would start the fourth quarter with a punt that was wind aided, going 70yds and making the Knights start deep in their own territory. After a reverse and a one hand Zach Ball catch the Raiders intercepted Cole and with 5:21 left would score to grab a 27-0 lead. The Knights would get their lone score of the game with 2:38 when Jon Berlier found pay dirt to make it 27-7. Southern Wells would tack on one more score for the 33-7 final.
