After cruising past Mississinewa Friday night the Wabash Lady Apache basketball team traveled to Marion Saturday to take on the Giants. Never winning in Marion the Lady Apaches road the one two punch of Claire Cromer and Sarah Puckett to move to 2-0 on the season with a 62-55 win on the road. Cromer, who set a new school single game scoring record Friday with 42 points, backed up that performance with 34 against Marion. Puckett added 18.
The Lady Apaches jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a Cromer three and two free throws, but the cat quick Giants rallied to score 10 straight to lead Wabash 10-5. Sarah Puckett would stop the Marion run with a free throw before another Giant bucket made it 12-6. Cromer, who had 13 first quarter points would drain two three pointers as the Apaches grabbed the lead back at 13-12. Madison Barden gave Wabash a 17-15 lead before two Marion free throws made it 17-17 after one.
Marion would grab an early lead in the second quarter at 24-20 when Cromer went off, hitting two three pointers and three free throws to score 9 straight points as Wabash led 29-24. Sarah Puckett would sandwich a bucket between two Marion buckets and the Apaches led 31-28 at the half.
Puckett and Shelby Stone would hit for Wabash to start the third quarter as the Apaches built their lead to 35-28 and expanded the lead to 43-37 with buckets from Barden and Cromer before Marion scored 7 straight points to end the quarter and led Wabash 44-43 with a quarter to go.
Wabash would respond to start the fourth quarter with a bucket from Puckett and two free throws from Cromer to take a 47-44 lead. With Marion trying to wear Cromer down the Apaches would go to Puckett, who had 10 fourth quarter points as Wabash built their lead to 57-51 after an Abby Stein steal resulted in a Cromer bucket. Mario cut the Wabash lead to 57-54 with a minute left, but free throws from Stone, Puckett and Cromer secured the 62-55 win.
Claire Cromer led Wabash with 34 points. Sarah Puckett added 18, Madison Barden 4, Shelby Stone 3, Sydney Mullett 2, Kristin Cromer 1.
The Wabash junior varsity topped Marion 38-24.
Jaycee Parrett and Katie McCauley had 11 points each. Bailey Yoakum added 9, Breanne Sewell 3, Sabrina Wagner 2, Vali Reed 2.
