Former Lady Apache basketball player Gina(Curtis)Hierlmeier brought her 2-1 Culver Cavaliers to Wabash Thursday night, handing the Lady Apaches their first loss of the season 48-39.
Culver jumped out to a 4-0 start as the Apaches were having a hard time finding the bucket until Claire Cromer connected on a three with 4:27 to play to trail 4-3. The Cavaliers would answer with two more buckets to grab an 8-3 lead when Cromer drained a two and was followed by Abby Stein with an offensive rebound bucket to cut the lead to one at 8-7. Cromer would then give Wabash their first and only lead of the game when she hit from outside the arch as the Apaches led 10-8 after one.
Culver would come out on fire in the second, scoring the first 12 points of the quarter to open a 20-10 lead before Shelby Stone and Claire Cromer hit back to back three’s to close the gap to 20-16. Down 22-16 Sarah Puckett would grab a rebound off her own shot, then convert the old fashion three point play to make it 22-19, but the Cavaliers answered with the last 5 points of the quarter to lead 27-19 at the half.
Both teams came out cold to start the third quarter with Culver getting the first point on a free throw at the 5:40 mark to lead 28-19 when the Lady Apaches closed the gap again. Sarak Puckett would hit a bucket and a free throw to make it 28-22, but a Cavalier 6 point run made it 34-22. Still hanging tough, Wabash would get another buckett from Puckett and one right before the buzzer form Madison Barden to make it 34-27 with a quarter to go.
After a Culver bucket started the fourth quarter it looked as though the Lady Apaches might be poised to make a run when Puckett hit and was followed by Sydney Mullett hitting two free thorws. With the game at 38-32 after a Kristin Cromer free throw the length of the Cavaliers started to pay off as they dumped the ball down low. forcing Wabash fouls while chewing up the clock for the 48-39 final.
Leading wabash was Claire Cromer with 18 points. Sarah Puckett added 11, Shelby Stone 3, Madison Barden 2, Sydney Mullett 2, Abby Stein 2, Kristin Cromer 1.
The Wabash junior varsity defeated Culver 41-5.
Katie McCauley led with 15 points. Bailey Yoakum added 10, Breanne Sewell 10, Kennedy Brackett 4, Sabrina Wagner 2.
