The Peru girls basketball team took their 1-1 record to Southwood Wednesday, as the Lady Knights were opening their season at home. The Lady Tigers got off to a fast start as they spoiled opening night for Southwood, defeating the Knights 61-39.
Shirley Morens would score 10 points for Peru in the first quarter which happened to be the first 10 points of the game as the Tigers raced out to a 10-0 lead. Katie Stouffer would stop the Tiger run with a bucket that started an 8-0 run for the Knights as they cut the lead to 10-8 by the end of the quarter. Stouffer and Taylor Heath had 4 points each.
Brooke Elliott would connect for Southwood to start the second quarter and knot the score at 10 when Peru would run again. The Tigers got buckets from four different players as they scored 8 in a row to go up 18-10. After the opening bucket for the Knights, thee next points would not come until Abby Houlihan hit two free throws with 3:37 left and was followed by an Elliott bucket to make it 18-14. Peru would then score 7 of the quarters final 9 points, as they led Southwood 25-16 at the half.
Per u would get buckets from Sidney Fuller and Morens to start the third quarter as the Tigers scored the first six points to open a 31-16 lead. Down 33-17 Southwood got two buckets from Stouffer and a free throw from Elliott to cut the Peru lead to 33-22, but the helter skelter pace put the Tigers at the line where they connected on six free throws and led 41-26 with a quarter to go.
Southwood would get the first bucket of the fourth quarter on a Brooke Elliott offensive rebound, then forced a five second call, but Peru answered with three buckets from Fuller to lead 47-30. Peru built their lead to 52-31 before Haley Heath hit followed by a Katie Stouffer three, but it was to little to late as the Tigers controlled the boards and the tempo in the 61-39 win.
Leading Peru was Sidney Fuller with 18 points. Shirley Morens added 16, Josie Murphy 10, Anna Weeks 9, Kelsie West 4, Ali Gardner 2, Candice Parks 2.
Leading Southwood was Katie Stouffer and Brooke Elliott with 11 points each. Haley Heath added 8, Taylor Heath 6, Abby Houlihan 2, Grace Whitham 1.
Peru won the junior varsity game 39-35.
Leading Peru was Ashlynn Shank with 19 points. Jesse Zvers, Emma Murphy and Jessica Carter added 4 points each. Jaelin Richardson had 2 points.
Leading Southwood was Ashley Parson with 15 points. Makenna Dawes added 8, Kassidy Atwood 7, Ellie White 2, Lorynn Hunt 2, Olivia Adams 1.
