Fresh off their marathon at Oak Hill Saturday the Manchester Lady Squires were back in action Monday as they played host to Lewis Cass. Manchester trailed most of the second half before a late fourth quarter surge lifted the Lady Squires to a 38-35 win.
The Lady squires came out of the gate swinging, getting a bucket from Cierra Carter, plus a three and a two from Drew Thompson to lead 7-0 before the Kings came storming right back, scoring 9 straight to take a 9-7 lead. Brooklyn Howard broke the Cass run with an offensive rebound bucket followed by another Thompson three before Cass ended the quarter with a three to even the score at 12 after one.
Bailey Sewell hit the first two Manchester buckets of the second quarter as Manchester led 16-13 when Cass scored 6 straight to take a 19-16 lead. Drew Thompson would then hit a three to tie the game before Cass hit a free throw with 4.3 seconds left to take a 20-19 lead to the locker room.
Manchester grabbed a 21-20 lead to start the second half on a Cierra Carter bucket, but fell behind 25-21 with four minutes to play. Drew Thompson would end the drought with a three to make it 25-24, then was followed by a Brooklyn Howard bucket with 26 seconds remaining to give Manchester a 26-25 lead. Cass ended the quarter hitting two free throws and led the Squires 27-26 with a quarter to go.
Brooklyn Howard would put the Squires back on top with a bucket to start the fourth quarter that Cass quickly erased with a four point surge to go back up 31-28. Rae Bedke would then hit a jumper to make it 31-30, but again Cass hit to make it 33-30. The play of the game came with the Squires trailing 33-32 when Celina Carter grabbed an offensive rebound, then converted an old fashion three point play to give Manchester a 35-33 lead with 1:40 on the clock. Cass would tie the score at 35. Drew Thompson would give Manchester the lead once more with 39.3 left as the foul game kicked in with Bedke hitting one free throw with 3.8 remaining to seal the 38-35 win.
Leading Manchester was Drew Thompson with 18 points. Brooklyn Howard added 6, Bailey Sewell 4, Cierra Carter 4, Celina Carter 3, Rae Bedke 3.
The Squire junior varsity jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 11-2 after the first quarter, never looking back in a 24-14 win over Cass.
