There were a lot of first at the Northfield boys basketball game Tuesday night. The Norse junior varsity and varsity teams both picked up their first win of the season along with junior varsity coach Josh Troyer and varsity coach Patrick Hopkins winning their first games as a high school coach.
The Norse varsity took care of Eastbrook 67-50 while the junior varsity won 50-25.
In the varsity game it took two minutes before a point was put on the board with Austin Burns giving Northfield a 2-0 lead. Eastbrook would take a 3-2 lead on a trey before Adam Roser answered from behind the arch to make it 5-5. Burns would hit again and was followed by Heath Miller hitting two free throws as the Norse opened a 9-5 lead. Again the Panthers would hit from behind the arch to make it 9-8. Miller then hit the final bucket of the opening quarter with the Norse leading 11-8.
The Norse came out hot to start the second quarter with Jake Schuler connecting. Heath Miller followed with two free throws and was followed by a Schuler hitting two as the Norse widened the gap to 17-8. At 17-10 Noah Shear drained a three with Miller and Schuler hitting as the lead grew to 24-13. A Panther bucket made it 24-15 when Adam Roser hot a bomb as the Norse built their lead to 33-20 at the half.
Austin Burns and Cody Holmes hit buckets to start the third quarter to lead 37-20 before Eastbrook connected twice. The Norse would bounce right back, getting points from Holmes and Jarred Short for a 41-24 lead when the Panthers scored four straight to make it 41-28. Not wanting a let down before the end of the quarter, Austin Burns scored on a put back bucket, then Noah Shear drained a three right before the buzzer for a 46-28 lead with a quarter to go.
Cody Holmes got the scoring going to start the fourth as Miller, Austin Trump and Tanner Wilcox scored to lead 52-33. Northfield maintained their 19 point lead at 55-36 when Eastbrook made a small run, cutting the Norse lead to 57-42, but the Norse capitalized on 13 made free throws in the quarter for the 67-50 win.
The Northfield junior varsity got 20 first half points from Austin Trump and got points from 9 different players as they cruised to a 50-25 win over Eastbrook.
