Strong First Half Lifts Lady Norse Past Madison Grant

The Northfield girls basketball team used a strong first half, building a 16 point lead on their way to a 57-45 win over Madison Grant Thursday.

Trailing 2-0 Payton Thomson drained a three to give the Norse the lead, then went on a 5-0 run to lead 8-4. Leading 8-6 Arie Kennedy would hit, followed by Jacklyn Peas to lead 12-6 after one.

The Argylls would score the first two points of the second quarter when Thomson, Kennedy and Cherish Leming connected to open an 18-8 lead. The Lady Norse would hold their 10 point lead when Thomson drained her second three and was followed by a Jacklyn Peas bucket off a steal to extend the lead to 27-12. After an Argyll free throw, Cherish Leming would hit two charity shots as the Norse led 29-13 at the half.

The third quarter would start with neither team being able to find the bucket before Madison Grant scored on a free throw at the 5:39 mark and score 5 straight to cut the lead to 29-18. Payton Thomson would then hit from long range again at 3:46 and with a Kennedy free throw it was 33-18. At 35-22 Thomson would connect on her fourth long ball to go up 16 and after a Cherish Leming bucket Northfield led 39-27 after three.

Madison Grant would cut the lead to single digits to start the fourth quarter, scoring 6 of the first 8 points to cut the lead to 41-33. Thomson would connect before the Argylls hit a three and a deuce to make it 43-38 and had the deficit at 45-40 with 2:58 to go. From then on the Norse would win the game at the free throw line. Leading just 47-43 with 1:40 to go, Northfield hit 10 free throws to build a 57-43 lead before a buzzer beater by the Argylls made the final 57-45.

Payton Thomson led Northfield with 26 points. Arie Kennedy added 11, Cherish Leming 10, Jacklyn Peas 7, Indi Shear 3. Lemng added 10 rebounds. Kennedy had 7.

The junior varsity used a comeback to defeat Madison Grant.
