Third Quarter Run Lifts Lady Apaches Over Peru

The Wabash girls basketball team trekked to Peru Wednesday to take on the red hot Lady Tigers who had won 7 games in a row and 9 of their last 10. Wabash was riding a 9 game win streak themselves as the two locked horns in a physical, grind it out battle won by the Lady Apaches 49-46.

Peru would control the first quarter as they got off to a 2-0 lead on two Sidney Fuller free throws and built the lead to 7-2 before Madison Barden converted a three point play to cut the lead to 7-5. Josie Murphy, who was 13 points away from 1000 would then drain a three and a deuce around a Sarah Pucket three to make it 12-8. Claire Cromer cut the lead to 12-10 on two free throws before Murphy ended the quarter with a three for a 15-10 Peru lead.

Ashlynn Shank would get the first bucket of the second quarter to increase the Tiger lead to 17-10 when Claire Cromer went to work. Cromer would hit back to back three’s with the second coming from the volleyball line to make it 17-16. Shank would answer with an offensive rebound bucket that was followed by two Cromer free throws for a 19-18 score. Cromer would hit a free throw between buckets from Kelsie West and Sidney Fuller as Peru led 23-19 at the half.

Peru would get two free throws from Josie Murphy to start the third quarter and increase their lead to 25-19 when Wabash went crazy. Claire Cromer was fouled on a missed three, sinking all three free throws that ignited a 10-0 run to give the Lady Apaches a 29-25 lead. During the run Kristin Cromer scored off an offensive rebound and Sydni Mullett scored off a Claire Cromer steal. Josie Murphy stopped the run with a bucket before Cromer drained another three followed by two Sarah Puckett free throws to increase the Wabash lead to 34-27. Peru would answer with a 6-0 run. During the run Josie Murphy connected on a free throw to give 1000 career points. At 34-33 Madison Barden hit, followed with buckets from Sidney Fuller and a buzzer beater two by Cromer to give Wabash a 38-34 lead with a quarter to go.

Peru cut the lead to two to start the fourth quarter on a Sidney Fuller bucket when a 7-0 Apache run came. Shelby Stone would drain a three, followed with a bucket and two free throws from Sarah Puckett for a 45-36 Wabash lead. Peru cut the lead to 47-41 on a free throw and a bucket from Ashlynn Shank. Peru would start to foul with Wabash missing the front end of two one and one’s, but the Lady Apaches got the offensive rebound on both misses, but still didn’t convert. With the score 47-42 Abby Stein hit one free throw. Sidney Fuller would trade one free throw with Claire Cromer to make it 49-43 before Kelsie West hit a three at the buzzer for the 49-46 final.

Peru won the junior varsity game in double overtime 42-35.

Bailey Yoakum led Wabash with 22 points. Katie McCauley added 7, Jaycee Parrett 6.
