The red hot Manchester boys basketball team played host to county rival Northfield Friday with both teams still playing for a TRC title. The Norse were coming in playing extremely well the past few weeks so something had to give. In a packed house the Norse gave the Squires everything they wanted until a 50 point second half out burst by the Squires propelled them to a 70-58 win for their 10th win in a row.
Northfield would strike first on a Heath Miller bucket that Chainey Zolman answered. Zolman and Tanner Wilcox would hit twice each as the Squires led 7-6 before another Miller bucket and a three from Noah Shear gave Northfield an 11-7 first quarter lead.
Northfield had a 4 point lead early in the second on a Cody Holmes bucket when Chase Fierstos hit two free throws followed by a Koehl Fluke three to give Manchester a 14-13 lead. Fierstos would hit two more free throws as the Squires extended their lead to 16-13 when Shear hit and Fierstos answered and it was 18-15. Two Tanner Wilcox free throws and a Fluke bucket made it 20-17 late in the quarter when Adam Roser drained a three before the horn and the game was knotted at 20 at the half.
Third quarter runs are not uncommon for the Squires this season and tonight was no exception. Early in the third the game was tied at 22 when Koehl Fluke connected to start an 11-0 run by the Squires to grab a 33-22 lead. Five different players scored during the run for the Squires. Northfield would score 6 of the next 8 points to cut the lead to 35-28 when Chase Fierstos hit back to back buckets with the second being a three, followed by a Fluke bucket to open a 42-28 lead. The Norse got it back to 10 on buckets from Wilcox and Burns, but Chainey Zolman ended the quarter with a bucket as Manchester led 44-32 with a quarter to go.
Zolman and Fluke would start the fourth quarter scoring as Heath Miller tried to keep the Norse in striking distance with free throws and a bucket but two Fierstos buckets, one being a three had the Squires up 52-35. Burns and Wilcox would hit to make it 52-35 as the pace picked up with the Norse eventually cutting the Squire lead to 65-57 on a Roser three with 1:00 remaining. Down 8 the Norse would have to foul and the Squires made them pay at the free throw line, hitting 5 free throws the last minute for the 70-58 final.
