Lady Apaches Open Sectional With Second Win Over Oak Hill

The 19-3 Wabash Lady Apaches kicked off the 2015 Manchester girls basketball sectional Tuesday taking on the Oak Hill Golden Eagles, a team they had defeated earlier in the season on December 16th 56-52 to pick up their 7th win of the season. Ironically the win over Oak Hill that night started the 13 game win streak the Lady Apaches were on coming in to the sectional, making it possible that the team the streak started against could end it.

Wabash jumped out to a big lead early before Oak Hill mounted a second half comeback to take a brief lead in the fourth with the Lady Apaches collecting themselves for a 49-44 win for their 14th in a row.

Oak Hill would take a 2-0 lead on a bucket from Toni Lautzenheimer before Wabash would make a run. Claire Cromer hit a free throw that started an 11-0 run to put the Apaches up 11-2. During the run Shelby Stone would drain a three to give Wabash the lead and was followed by two Kristin Cromer free throws, a Claire Cromer three and another Stone bucket. Oak Hill cut the Wabash lead to 13-7 before Kristin Cromer ended the quarter with two free throws and a 15-7 Wabash lead.

The Lady Eagles would close the gap to start the second quarter on buckets from Hannah Bischoff and Geralyn Miller, plus a free thorw from Lautzenheimer to make it 15-12 before Madison Barden connected. At 17-14 Barden would hit again and was followed by two Claire Cromer free throws to make it 21-14 when Abby Scott drained two straight three pointers to make it 21-20. The half would end with a Sarah Puckett bucket and a buzzer beater three at the volleyball line from Claire Cromer for a 26-20 Wabash lead.

The Lady Apaches have made it a habit this year of coming out of the locker room and mounting a run and it looked as though it would happen again. Shelby Stone would hit back to back bombs to open a 32-20 lead when things changed. Abby Scott would convert a three point play for the Eagles that started a 7-0 run as Oak Hill cut the margin to 32-27. Claire Cromer stopped the run with a three of her own, but theEagles answered with a bucket and a three from Lautzenheimer to make it 35-32. Claire Cromer would then hit her second three of the quarter and Oak Hill answered with buckets from Shepherd and Lautzenheimer to make it 38-36 with a quarter to go.

Oak Hill would tie the game at 38 to start the quarter with a bucket from Bischoff that was answered by Sydni Mullett. The Lady Eagles would then score on a deuce and a three from Scott to grab the lead since the opening two points for a 44-40 lead with 4:52 remaining. The Lady Apaches wouldn’t panic, getting a three from Claire Cromer to cut the Oak Hill lead to 44-43, then take a 45-44 ┬álead on a Madison Barden bucket with 2:30 left. Tightening the defense Kristin Cromer would come up with a big steal at the 1:39 mark and was followed by sister Claire hitting two free throws with 1:01 on the clock for a 47-44 lead. The Wabash defense would then cause a jump ball and knock the ball out of bounds a couple times as the clock dwindled to 12.5 seconds remaining. On a missed Oak Hill shot Kristin Cromer hit the deck battling for a rebound and in a heads up play called time out and the Apaches had the ball. Three Oak Hill fouls drained the clock to 0.1 when Claire Cromer hit two free throws for the 49-44 final.

Leading Wabash was Claire Cromer with 23 points. Shelby Stone added 11, Kristin Cromer 6, Madison Barden 5, Sydni Mullett 2, Sarah Puckett 2.
