Squire Tennis Edges Churubusco

The Squire tennis team hosted Churubusco on a very windy night and came away with a 3-2 victory. Max Karg jumped out of the gate and stormed to a 6-0 opening set win. He eased up late in the match and coasted to a 6-3 second set, completing play in 45 minutes. “Max really controlled his extremely athletic opponent in all facets of the game.” Next, at 1 doubles, Noah Cain and Matthew Pegg notched the second point for Manchester as they showed skill and determination. “Noah and Matthew served okay considering the weather, but their service returns and net play led them to victory.” Meanwhile, Spence Trick continued to improve against an experienced senior. Trick nearly took the opening set and battled through the second set all the way to the end. “By the end of the season, Spence will be able to beat a player like he faced tonight.” Still needing one more win, the attention turned to 3 singles and Luke Donathan. He won the first set handily 6-0, but his opponent changed strategy to win a close second set 4-6. Meanwhile, the two doubles team of Heath Dierks and Parker Wagner struggled to win the close games as they lost 6-7 with the tiebreaker 5-7. They rebounded to play more aggressive and take set two 7-5. The Squires now needed one of the two 3 setters. It would be Luke Donathan who would find his consistent strokes and passing shots to win a tight 6-1 third set. “The tennis team roared in appreciation of Luke’s efforts against an older player to secure the team win. Luke grew up tonight as he faced an emotional, gritty opponent.” The night wrapped up as Dierks and Wagner lost their third set in a three hour match. “Everyone learned how to play in the wind and handle players with unconventional strokes. We all have something to work on in practice tomorrow, but rejoice in a close team victory tonight.” The Squires, now 2-1 to start the season, travel to rival Peru on Wednesday before hosting Bluffton and Huntington North on September 1&2.
