The Northfield and Southwood football teams went to battle in the metro bowl Friday at Northfield with the Norse executing a dominating 40-0 win.
The Knights would receive the opening kick off and collect 25yds before they were forced to punt with Cale Dyson busting through the line to block the kick and give Northfield great field position on the Southwood 25. After two incomplete passes and a five yard run the Norse went for it on 4th and 5 with Jared Short scoring on a pitch from Drake Richter for 25yds with 8:07 left to take a 6-0 lead. After another Northfield defensive stand, Short would run the punt back to the Knight 48. One play later Drake Richter raced 48yds to score with 6:25 on the clock to make it 13-0.
The Norse were threatening to score a third time when the first quarter ended and had the ball 2nd and goal on the 8 to start the second quarter. The Southwood defense would tighten and force the Norse to go backwards, taking over on the 17. The Knights would mount a drive and had the ball on the Norhtfield 14 when Richter picked off Carson Blair, taking the ball to the 42. Four plays later Richter scored from 42yds out with 7:05 left in the half to make it 20-0. Northfield would score one more time before the half when Matt Coe found the end zone from a yard out with 1:38 remaining as Northfield led 27-0 at the half.
The Norse would get the ball first in the third quarter and fumbled on the first play with Matt Cox recovering for the Knights. The Knights would mount a small drive, but a key sack by Jake Stephan, Xian Rodriguez and Chris Orput, plus a key tackle by Jensen Freiden on a hook and ladder stalled the drive. The Norse would capitalize on the defense with Richter scoring agin from 3 yds out with 5:19 left in the quarter for a 34-0 lead. The Knight offense stalled on the next possession and decided to fake a punt that was blown up by Alex Metzger. With 2:52 left in the quarter Jensen Freiden scored to increase the lead to 40-0.
The fourth quarter was a game of field position as neither team would find the end zone in the 40-0 final.
