The Manchester and Peru girls basketball teams met for the first time as TRC opponents Wednesday at Manchester. After a sluggish start the Lady Squires picked it up in the second half for a 50-35 win over the Tigers.
The game took a few minutes to find some rhythm as travels and fouls were the case the first two minutes with the Squires leading 2-0 on an Ellie Milam bucket before things started to pick up. Manchester would go up 4-1 on a bucket from Rae Bedke before Peru came storming back with 6 straight to grab a 7-4 lead. Milam would then hit two free throws, followed by buckets from Bedke and Tiffany Johnson to lead 10-7. Peru closed the quarter with a bucket for a 10-9 first quarter score.
Bailey Sewell would hit a free throw to start the second quarter, followed by a Milam bucket to make it 13-9 before the Tigers ripped off 6 straight to grab a 15-13 lead. Again Milam would answer, but a Peru bucket made it 18-16. With 3.1 seconds remaining in the half, Cierra Carter found the bucket for the first time and converted an old fashion three to give Manchester a 19-18 halftime lead.
The Tigers would get the first bucket of the third quarter before buckets from Drew Thompson and Milam gave the Squires a 23-20 lead. Back came the Tigers, scoring 5 straight to go up 25-23 when Bailey Sewell and Sydney Day hit for a 27-25 lead. Tied at 27 Sewell would hit for the second time in the quarter, followed by a Milam lay up off a steal. Peru made it 31-29 before Milam ended the quarter with a three and the Squires leading 34-29.
Manchester would increase their lead to start the fourth quarter when Thompson and Day both scored off steals to make it 38-29. Two Tiger buckets made it 38-32 when Thompson drained a three. The Squires were up 45-35 after a Sewell bucket, then scored the last 5 points of the game for the 50-35 win.
