Have you heard the phrase”chicks dig the long ball”. In the first half Thursday the Northfield Lady Norse proved that statement true as they hit 9 three pointers to lead 37-24 at the half and went on to defeat Mississinewa 56-40.
Trailing 2-0 to start the game Abby Keaffaber would drain a three to take a 3-2 lead that led to an 11-0 run. Following Keaffaber, Kelcie Thomson hit and was followed by sister Peyton with a three that was backed up by another Keaffaber three to lead 11-2. At 11-5 Indi Shear would score two straight buckets to increase the lead to 15-5 before the Indians made it 15-9. Peyton Thomson would end the quarter with her second three as Northfield led 18-9 after one.
Mississinewa cut the Northfield lead to 20-14 early in the second before Ally Keaffaber drained a bomb that was followed by Peyton Thomson’s third three. At 26-16 Ariel Dale would join the three point club to make it 29-16. With the score 31-21 Peyton Thomson hit her fourth three, then drained her fifth of the half as the Lady Norse led 37-24 at the half.
The Indians scored the first 5 points of the third quarter to cut the Norse lead to 37-29 when Abby Keaffaber and Kelcie Thomson hit back to back to make it 41-29. Dale and Peyton Thomson would trade buckets with the Indians the remainder of the quarter as the Norse led 45-33 with a quarter to go.
Again, Mississinewa would score first in the quarter, cutting the Northfield lead to 45-36 with a three when the Norse responded with the dagger. Kelcie Thomson would score a goal and two free throws that ignited a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach at 54-36. During the run Abby Keaffaber and Peyton Thomson scored. Ally Keaffaber would score the last Norse points as they went on to the 56-40 win.
Leading Northfield was Peyton Thomson with 19 points. Abby Keaffaber added 13, Kelcie Thomson 8, Ally Keaffaber 5, Ariel Dale 5, Indi Shear 4, Melanie Beery 2. Peyton Thomson added 5 assist, Abby Keaffaber 6 rebounds, 2 assist, Kelcie Thomson 3 rebounds, 3 assist, 6 steals.
The Northfield junior varsity was defeated by Mississinewa 42-23.
