Lady Knights Start Fast In Win Over Maconaquah

The Southwood girls basketball team got off to a good start Tuesday, tripling the score on Maconaquah in the first quarter as they defeated the Lady Braves 46-35.

Brooke Elliott and Brianna Humbert would trade buckets to start the game before Taylor Heath hit a bucket that started a 7-0 run for Southwood. Elliott would hit again with Makenna Dawes finding the bucket as the Knights led 9-3 after one.

Humbert would hit back to back buckets to start the second quarter to cut the Southwood lead to 9-7 when Kassidy Atwood would start the second Knight run. The Knights would get free throws from Heath, Elliott and Ashley Parson to score 8 straight and grab an 18-7 lead before two Kate White free throws. Southwood would score the last 4 points of the half on two Elliott free throws and a Dawes bucket to lead 22-9 at the half.

It looked like the Knights were going to run away with the game to start the third quarter. Free throws from Elliott, plus two buckets from Morgan Farr and one from Heath built the Knight lead to 30-11. The Knights would continue to push the ball with Heath and Farr hitting again to increase their lead to 35-15 when Maconaquah went on a run. The Braves would get a bucket from White that ignited a 10-0 run to close the gap to 35-25 at the end of three. Courtney Campbell had 4 points during the run with Humbert also scoring.

Brooke Elliott would stop the Braves run to start the fourth quarter as the Knights built the lead to 41-27 off buckets from Farr and a second Elliott two. Things would then get interesting as Maconaquah would go to Humbert as the Knights cooled off with Humbert scoring 6 points and White 2 as the Braves cut the deficit to 41-35 with 1:44 to go. Brooke Elliott would hit 6 free throws the last minute as the Knights held on for the 46-35 win.
