Knights Use Balance To Top Valley

The Southwood boys basketball team jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter Friday, but a resilient Tippecanoe Valley club wouldn’t cave as the Knights gave away the lead in the first before coming back to defeat Valley 72-61.

Down 4-0 to start the game, Southwood would get a bucket from Brandin Frazier that started a 7-0 run to grab a 7-4 lead. Matthew Nose had a bucket during the run with Peyton Trexler converting a three point play. Tied at 7 the Knights would run again. Frazier would get a bucket and two free throws, followed by a buckets from Blake Martz and Carson Blair to grab a 15-7 lead. Valley would respond with a 10-0 run to go up 17-15 before a Alex Harmon free throw made it 17-16. The Vikings would end the quarter with back to back three pointers and led the Knights 22-16 after one.

The Knights would regroup in a big way to start the second. Two Frazier buckets and two Blair free throws made it 23-22 before two Matthew Nose free throws put the Knights up 24-23. Tied at 24 Alex Harmon would ignite a Southwood 7-1 run with a reverse pivet two hand dunk that gave the Knights a 31-25 lead and scored two more times along with a Blair three and a deuce to lead 38-32 at the half.

The two teams punched and counter punched to start the third quarter and with the Knights leading 46-44 Trexler would connect to start an 8-0 run to give Southwood a 54-44 lead. The Knights led 54-47 after three.

Blake Martz would carry the load early in the fourth, scoring the Knights first 7 points that included a three as the Knights cling to a 61-56 lead. A three from Nose and another Martz bucket made it 66-57 and led 68-61 with 52.2 left when Valley started to foul. Carson Blair and Matthew Nose each hit two free throws the last 50 seconds to seal the 72-61 win.

Leading the Knights was Blake Martz and Carson Blair with 15 points each. Brandin Frazier added 14, Alex Harmon 10, Matthew Nose 9, Peyton Trexler 7.


The Southwood junior varsity defeated Valley 38-33.

Leading the Knights was Paul Farlow with 18 points. Ethen Roberts added 7, Dallas Holmes 6, Luke Winer 4, Quentin Perry 3.
