The Northfield boys basketball team built a 24-9 first quarter lead then needed a fourth quarter comeback to defeat Caston 55-53 Saturday.
A Cody Holmes two and a Noah Shear three put the Norse up 5-0 before the Comets broke the ice. With Northfield leading 9-7 after two Kyle Reed free throws and a bucket Austin Trump would connect for a bucket that started a 9-0 run as the Norse led 18-7. Reed had another bucket during the run with Holmes scoring and Ryan Driscoll draining a three. With the score 18-9 it was Reed again with free throws, followed by a John Schuler bucket and a Reed offensive rebound bucket at the buzzer to grab a 24-9 lead after one.
As good as the first quarter was, it was just the opposite in the second. Caston scored 9 straight to start the quarter and cut the Norse lead to 24-18 before two Holmes buckets made it 28-18. The Comets kept coming however, scoring 11 straight to grab a 29-28 lead before Reed tied the game with a free throw. Caston would out score Northfield 9-2 the remainder of the quarter and led 38-31 at the half.
Caston would extend their lead to 40-31 to start the third quarter before Reed and Holmes hit to make it 40-35. At 42-35 Holmes would score three straight, followed by a three point play from Noah Shear to end the quarter as the Norse trailed 42-41 with a quarter to go.
Kyle Reed would get the first two buckets of the fourth quarter, then fed Shear on a back door play to put the Norse up 47-42. Schuler would sandwich a bucket between Caston points to make it 49-46. Noah Shear would then connect to make it 51-46 when Caston scored 5 straight to tie the game with 1:10 left. With the score still the same with .40 remaining Shear made a move at the top of the key that left his defending lying on the floor, hitting from 15 feet to make it 53-51. After a Caston miss Holmes would score off an out of bounds play before the Comets hit at the buzzer for the 55-53 final.
